![]() What is Search Engine Optimisation?SEO is a part of the general Internet Marketing industry. The technical process of search engine optimisation involves identifying markets to target (keywords or keyphrases) and implementing a range of on site and off site techniques to achieve high rankings for these terms on search engines. What's the big deal with "ethical" Search Engine Marketing? Ethical search engine marketing is a phrase generally used to describe the different sets of techniques that can be used to achieve good search engine rankings. Simply put, the line is traditionally drawn between helping yourself gain rankings that you deserve and cheating your way to rankings that you otherwise wouldn't get. So which way is the best?Apples and oranges really. "Ethical" SEO (also know as "white hat" SEO) has substantial long term benefits but takes longer to reap results. "Unethical" SEO (also know as "black hat" SEO) reaps results much quicker, but search engines such as Google, MSN and Yahoo don't like it at all and will ban sites completely if they find certain SEO techniques being used. A lot of people argue that it isn't really an ethical debate - just business. The ethics come into play when you are selling a generic "SEO" service to a client and don't educate them about the associated risks. Have your say on SEO ethics on our discussion forums. |
