Cooking Queen, Reality Cooking Show And Spanish Cooking Tour

North Vancouver couple to offer Spanish cooking tour

2006-4-29

After spending many years running their own restaurant, La Cascada Verde, on the Costa del Sol in Spain, Mike and Hilary Powell came to North Vancouver. They have found away to incorporate their love of Spain and of cooking by launching A Flavour of Spain Vacations, in which food lovers and artists can experience southern Spain through cooking and painting workshops.

Chef Mike Powell will introduce participants to Spanish country dishes and Spanish-inspired recipes that he says are easy to recreate. Using fresh, locally grown ingredients, Powell will prepare complete Mediterranean meals, from summer soups to desserts. He will share his knowledge of Andalucian cuisine and culture as well as teaching the secrets of Spanish cooking. Guests dine on the meals they prepare.

In addition to excursions to Granada, the Alhambra, Cordoba and more, vacationers will search for the freshest produce with Mike and Hilary in the local markets at Villanueva de Tapia and Antequera, visit the Alvear Winery in Montilla and an organic olive oil mill in Baena.

NBC sours on reality cooking show

2006-4-29

The cream didn't rise to the top and NBC made a wise decision to pull its attempt at creating a reality television cooking show before the season is over.

Apparently "Celebrity Cooking Showdown" left a bad taste in everyone's mouths, not just mine, and the network decided to pull the show before airing the last two episodes.

The idea of the cooking disaster was to pair three celebrity chefs to train side by side with nine celebrities.

After one-on-one coaching and culinary class, the competition played out in real time, but proved to be a real flop.

The stars were in front of a live studio audience, racing against the clock to create their meals.

The final episodes were set to air last Thursday and Friday, but I'm not sure anyone noticed they were missing from NBC's lineup.

For those of you who are disappointed that the show didn't turn out to be the tasty treat NBC wanted, you can still find out the results of the last two episodes on the network's Web site.

But NBC's not alone in making bad reality decisions. While I loved the movie "Coyote Ugly," CMT's new series that is searching for the "ultimate" coyote bartender is just too much.

I did get hooked in to watching a few reruns - not because I was enjoying myself, but because I couldn't believe the show was so horrible and I wanted to know if it got any better. It didn't.

Starting out in New York, the show follows Coyote Ugly founder Liliana Lovell as she makes a nationwide search for the ultimate coyote.

Cooking queen kept 'grandkids' fulfilled

2006-4-28

YBOR CITY - Like the recipes that fill her cookbooks, Clarita Garcia is remembered for a life as rich and savory as her favorite dishes.

The culinary legend died April 20 of heart failure. She was 91.

Mrs. Garcia came from a family in which the preparation of fine Spanish food was both a way of life and a livelihood. Her grandfather was an innkeeper in Spain, and her uncle Pancho cooked for Spain's King Alfonso XIII.

"She didn't have a mean bone in her body. She was one of those people that laughed at herself a lot," said close friend Helen Benito.

Originally from Spain, Mrs. Garcia attended the University of Madrid, where she studied languages. With her degree, she worked at the U.S. Embassy as an interpreter, before settling in Tampa.

She and her late husband, Manuel Garcia Jr., took over Las Novedades restaurant in Ybor City and ran it for 30 years.

Benito recalled Las Novedades in its prime: "It was a beautiful building. They brought in a lot of Goya paintings and marble. It was a very pretty building."
