Southwest Washington Report

Cowlitz River Steelhead have finally made their arrival in fair numbers. In the last week Summer Steelhead are being caught by both bank and boat anglers. Look for most fish and fishermen to be around the Blue Creek area. Eggs and Shrimp are my choices for bait but don't rule out your favorite jigs. Look for things only to get better as we near July.

Don't overlook the Lewis River. It's putting out a few fish for those who are giving it a try. I'd say stay between the hatchery area and the Golf Course. Good Luck.

Skagit River

The Chinook fishery has gotten off to a good start this year. The high water have the fish spread out pretty good, and have been finding most of our fish in 8 to 15 feet of fast moving water. When the river levels drop the big deep holes will be better producers.

The male to female percentage for the hatchery fish is very low about 20% female 80% male indicating that we are still early in the run and the big push is still to come. We are finding lots of natives as well, close to half of the "hook ups" have been native fish. we have also released a quite few steelhead over the last week, some of them in surprisingly good shape.

Free drifting Golf Ball sized egg clusters and back trolling plugs has been our primary tactics with the high water. When the water levels drop and the fish move into deeper holes, back bouncing eggs will become a better option.

I still have a couple dates available in June, and am also booking 4 hour evening trips for Skagit Kings. A flat rate of 250.00 for the boat. Up to 4 persons.

Well as of today... Fishing on the upper skagit has pretty much been fair to slow. WE have picked up a few nice hatchery bratts nearing 20 pounds but most are averaging around 10 or so. There are a few jacks showing up already. The hatchery is nearing close to a couple of hundred fish in the pens. The river is still very high and the fish seem to be on the move constantly. We have picked them up pulling plugs and boondoggin. We did hook a dolly around 8 pounds the other day and some smaller ones also. There are also some down river steelhead hanging around still.

Sturgeon has been the usual hit and miss. We did manage to hook a very large fish today around 10 feet. Maybe bigger.. I didn't see the fish until the tail was just about back in the water but the 10 year old boy that had it on said it was huge. We faught it for nearly an hour without making much progress. We decided to break it off and try to find some keepers.

The Skykomish has been fair for steelhead in the last week, The fish are kinda scattered through out the river so boondogin has been the key to finding these fish. Not too many Chinook being caught but there are a few. Spend your time around the mouth of the wallace if your targeting the kings.

The Cowlitz has also picked up for summer run steelies... Not too many people as of yet and fishing has been fairly productive from blue creek on down.

Dam counts on the Columbia still show enough fish in the river to go and chase these delicious table fair.

We have a few openings left for june.. but very few. I will be running some evening trips up on the skagit for the springers if any one is ineterested please give me a call...

A peak at this summer/fall fishing opportunities - update

June 1 to July 31

From all early indications this summer's salmon fishery is shaping up to be a good one. Early season test fisheries are already showing good numbers of Chinook Salmon in the river. These early fish are best targeted by Bar fishing or plunking spin n glo's out of the boat. Best fishing is between mid June to late July. Good numbers of fish between 12 to 25 lbs are caught on a regular basis.

Trout fly fishing

The months of June & July we are offering some excellent fly fishing opportunities for Rainbow Trout and Sea-run Bull Trout. The interior of BC is only 2 hours from our door step with hundreds of lakes to choose from. Local rivers offer some incredible angling opportunities for sea-run Bull trout of up to 10 lbs. This is truly a fly fishermans dream with no crowds, great scenery and a good chance at seeing some wildlife like bears, deer, elk and the odd cougar.

August 1 - 21

Sockeye pre-season estimates are 17.4 million for the 2006 summer salmon fishing season. Early runs are expected to hit the river by early July with a late July opening. Best fishing should be between August 1 to 21. This is a great family fishery that offers lots of action and some great table fare.

August 21 - Sept 10

Last year this time period offered some of our best Bar fishing/plunking for late run red Chinook. We were averaging 5 to 10 fish per day with a few 20 fish days catching King Salmon between 14 to 30 lbs. Our largest landed fish was 42lbs.

September 10 to Sept 31

Sturgeon, sturgeon and more sturgeon. By early September we are into our best sturgeon fishing of the season. This is when our largest fish of the year are caught and average catch rates rise substantially. This incredible sturgeon fishing will continue on through October & November with great fishing opportunities right through until late November. Call and ask us about our September Sturgeon Specials.

October 1 to Nov 31

October is one of our favorite months of the year to fish. There are millions of salmon in our local rivers willing and ready to take the fly or grab onto a spoon or spinner. The Fraser Valley area has one of the largest salmon migrations in the world not to mention the annual Bald Eagle migration that arrives in mid October. Rivers are full of fish, tree's are alive with bald Eagles, how much better can it get. Well believe it or not, it does get better. If you're after a trophy sturgeon, October is the best month of the year. Last year there was a sturgeon caught right outside our front door measuring over 11 ft in length.
