What is V.92?
V.92 is the new dial-up modem specification from the ITU
(International Telecommunications Union) that introduces three new features
that will add convenience and performance for the modem user. The three
features are Quick Connect, Modem-On-Hold™, and PCM Upstream.
Overview of V.92 features:
- Quick Connect will shorten the time it takes to make a connection by
remembering ("training") the phone line characteristics and storing
them for later usage. Under optimal conditions, Quick Connect may
decrease modem handshaking (the noise you hear when you connect) time
by up to 50% over conventional V.90 modems.
- Modem-On-Hold™ allows you to receive an incoming call on the same
line that is accessing the Internet and stay connected to the Internet.
Call-Waiting service from your phone company is required.
- PCM Upstream/V.44 Compression* - PCM Upstream boosts the upstream data
rates between the user and ISP to reduce upload times for large files
and email attachments. V.44 compression provides higher data compression
ratios, allowing for more information to be downloaded in the same
amount of time.
*Hawaii OnLine is presently testing PCM Upstream/V.44
Compression and plans to release these features in the coming months
What modems and operating systems work with V.92?
Most computers purchased today are available with a V.92
capable modem. If you are using Windows 98/2000/XP and wish to upgrade your
modem to V.92, the list below contains modems which we have thoroughly
tested and verified to work* optimally with our systems.
- U.S. Robotics V.92 56K External FaxModem
- CompUSA V.92 56K PCI Internal Data/Fax Modem
As we verify the reliability of more modems, we will post them on this page.
* Although these modems performed reliably under our conditions,
every computer operating environment is unique and results may vary.
