Built in 1817, Old Baldy is North Carolina's oldest standing lighthouse. The historic structure dominates the landscape on Bald Head Island which is located at the confluence of the Cape Fear River, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.
A replica of the 1850s keeper's cottage adjacent to the lighthouse serves as the Smith Island Museum. Opened in the spring of 2000, the museum provides a permanent place for display of artifacts and commemorates more than 400 years of the Cape Fear Region's maritime history.
We encourage you to explore this site and to visit the island in person to learn more about the fascinating history of Old Baldy and the Cape Fear region.
