Throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, people around the world were impressed with the Soviet Space Program.  The Russians launched the first satellite, Sputnik 1, on October 4th, 1957.  On April 12th 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space aboard the Vostok 1. He orbited the globe in 90 minutes.

This 1971 photograph was taken at the "Park of Achievements" in Moscow.
