Ballina to Clongee (Foxford
Area)
The main Moy channel between Ballina and Cloongee/Ballylahan is
divided among at least a dozen separate owners/operators. Some of the
water, mainly around Ballina, Foxford and Cloongee is suitable for fly
fishing but generally these stretches are fished with bait, spinner and
bubble & fly. Most fisheries have a limit on the number of rods let, but
all will issue daily, and some, weekly permits. Prices vary considerably
depending on location and time of year; further details of tariffs and
availability can be sought from the fisheries owners/managers.
The various sections in this stretch are divided as follows:
1. The Ballina Salmon Anglers
Association
This association water is managed under licence from the state and from
the Verscoyle family. It comprises approximately 3 miles of double bank
fishing from the weir in Ballina to the confluence with the Corroy
river. There are some newly developed pools in the Ballina area which
are suitable for fly fishing. The remaining 2 ½ miles consists mainly of
deep, slow flowing water and is suitable for angling with bait and
spinner, although the bubble and fly method can also be very effective
here. Catches on this stretch are estimated at approximately 1,000
–2,000 salmon per season. Seatrout are also regularly caught in this
stretch. The number of rods is not limited and permits are available at
a very reasonable price from local tackle shops and from the following
outlets.
