Rome Turist Information - Rome Hotel Start

Useful Information and recommendations for Tourist

  •  Don't take a large sum of money with you . If you do, put it in an easily controlled pocket (for example the front one). Pay particular attention if you are in a crowd and on public transport
  • When you walk, keep the bag to the side where there is a wall, if possible
  • If you believe you have attracted the attention of suspicious-looking people, stop at a commercial business and ask for the assistance of the Police Force
  • Do not trust people offering you unsolicited information: they may be malicious or dishonest
  • Avoid gypsies with cardboard trays or newspapers: they use them for pick-pocketing.
  • You'd better not go alone to cash money from the Bancomat: pay attention to those who are near and around you or glance over what you are doing.
  • Try not to walk alone at night, especially in the less central areas.
  • If you have come to Rome by car, make sure that the safety catches are closed while you are driving and especially when you stop at traffic lights.
  • In the underground crossing, join other passengers, do not stay behind and do not stop to listen to anyone offering you a bargain and/or proposing to be your guide.

Documents :

  • Make a copy or write out the details of them, to make easier the files on case of  loss or theft.
  • Always take them separated or, in any case, NOT with money.

On the train:

  • Take a seat in the front carriages, where you can always find the chief conductor or the Railroad Police, if aviable, who can advice and help you if necessary.
  • Never enter compartments with the shutters down and where lights are dim or off and close your sleeping car compartment from the inside.
  • If you hang your overcoat or jacket over your seat, take your wallet and your valuables (brooches, etc.) out of the pocket.
  • If you want to rest, make sure you have safely placed your bag and valuables.
  • Watch carefully your bags and luggage in the station under-crossing while going up and down and, as a rule, in all crowed places. If you must use the luggage trolley, place your luggage carefully so that it does not fall; keep the bag with money and documents under your arms.

Hitch-hiking:

  • Just one and only advice: DON'T DO IT!!!
Trains, coaches, undergrounds, buses and taxicab may take you wherever you want, in all peace and safety

Expecially for women:

  • Someone could harass you on the bus, do not hesitate and rebel against him and ask for help from bus driver.
  • If you have suffered an abuse:
Immediately after the abuse go to the Firs Aid department of an hospital without  taking out the marks of the damage sustained; the telephone number 113 will help you find the nearest one.

After the medical examination, ask for a medical certificate declaring the  violence you have suffered.

The medical examination is essential not only because therapies may be required to prevent infections and treat injuries, but also to provide evidence of offence committed.

After having suffered a sexual aggression, many womwn may experience feelings of fear and shame. They could alse feel vulnerable and confused, they might feel a sense of guilt, anxiety and depression. It is crucial, however, to react and to denouce.
  • Therefore, keep the medical certificate and all and every evidence of violence you have suffered and submit them to the Police Office or to the Carabinieri Stations, together with the denunciation.
  • Talk to trustworthy persons. You have the victim of a vialonce and you must obtain justice. The culprit counts on your silence.
  • Apply an appropriate Centre which, through its women advisor, lawyers and solicitors, psycologist, social workers can assist you and inform you on what can be done to obtain justice.
  • Thereafter, undergo appropriate tests to ascertain any possible consequence of the crime, such as pregnancy or disease.

Safety during your stay in Rome, and in meeting and touristic places:

  • Don't leave your bags and luggage unattended
  • Don't leave your bags, parcels and anything else with an unknown person for safekeeping, also if momentary
  • In case of finding of suspicious objects DON'T touch them and inform immediately the police.
  • Follow carefully recommendations of organizers and Police Force.

Last recommandation:

  • Make a note of your temporary address and telephone number in Rome.
You could not remember them in case of need.
Public Toilets
ncient ruins are everywhere; public toilets are not. You'll become expert in instantly sensing the location of facilities in restaurants you're not eating in! It's never been a problem for us. Onerous, perhaps at times, but turn it into a game!

Visiting Hours
heck our Visiting Hours page for a lisiting of the more important sights.

Admission Prices
dmissions are generally inexpensive in Rome. ($5-10) Many churches ask for a 'donation'; 500-2000 lire is adequate.

Health
few express (probably ill-informed) concern about the water, but Ed's had only one problem in 30 years of visits and probably brought the bug with him. While we usually drink bottled water at meals as a matter of taste, we drink lots of tap water in the room.

Language
English is understood and spoken moderately well in tourist areas in Rome and major cities. Many waiters can give at least a sketchy description of selections in English. (Unfortunately this means that sometimes beef, pork, and veal may all be translated to "meat".)

However, more than in Northern Europe, you'll find a few words of the local language useful. The more off the beaten track, the more inexpensive the restaurant, hotel or shop, the more at least a little Italian will be helpful.

Credit Cards
Visa and MasterCard are widely honored. (MasterCard is accepted at shops displaying the EuroCard symbol.) AMEX (and Diner's Club) are honored in many hotels, restaurants and shops. You will find some hotels do not take (any) credit cards. Verify before you go, certainly before you check out.

ATMs
Widely available. In major cities often inside bank foyers. While bank patrons' cards may unlock the door outside business hours, yours probably will not. Best to get cash during the day.
