Quick Guide to Babylon 6

All you need for full text translations and dictionary results in one easy to use package.
Instantly translate words and texts or convert figures in Word, Excel, emails, instant messenger, web pages and any other desktop application. Babylon opens a small window with the desired results without disturbing your work flow.



The Babylon Click -Text Translation in a single click

During the installation process Babylon's default activation keys are Ctrl+Right click. This combination will automatically initiate the Babylon translation service. This is the Babylon Click.

To translate words, phrases or texts in a single click, just Babylon-click on a word within the desired text. The Babylon window automatically opens and displays the translation or dictionary results for the selected term or text.

For text translation (a paragraph for example) simply Babylon-click on one word within the text and Babylon automatically captures the surrounding text and initiates the text translation service.

If at anytime you forget your Babylon Click configuration, place your mouse over the Babylon icon in your system tray and a tool tip will pop up with the Babylon Click combination. In addition, you can open the Babylon Configuration > Translate Tab and it will show you your Babylon click combination.

You can change your Babylon Click configuration at any time via the configuration menu under the find tab.





Activating Babylon - get instant translation

The easiest and fastest way to get translations is clicking on a word using the Babylon Click.
You can also manually open the Babylon window and either paste or directly type in the text or term you wish to translate.

Manually opening the Babylon window:
  • Click (Babylon click) on any empty area of your screen or;
  • Press the keyboard activation shortcut, the Babylon default is F10 or;
  • Click the Babylon icon in the tray menu or;
  • Right-click the Babylon icon on the tray menu and then selecting Open from the menu.


Translation results

The Babylon Click retrieves results both online and offline.

When you are online (connected to the Internet):
Babylon Click on any word, phrase or term to get instant translation as well as dictionary and encyclopedia results. The results will appear in the Babylon results window.
At the end of the results list appears a "More Results" link that enables you to view additional results that were retrieved from Babylon's wide range of authoritative online sources. The "More Results" link appears only in cases where additional results are available.



In addition, you can expand your results by browsing Babylon's extensive list of over 1,200 free dictionaries and encyclopedias covering a wide range of topics in over 50 languages. Select a title name, click the Download / Subscribe button to get results from the selected dictionary.

When you are offline (not connected to the Internet):
To get results when you are offline you must have dictionaries or encyclopedias installed locally on your computer.



To download and install dictionaries locally do one of the following:
  • When you receive results from online titles, click on the dictionary title, select "Add to My Dictionaries" and choose "I want to download it now". You need to be connected to the Internet for this to work.

  • Go to the Babylon website and browse our extensive list of over 1,200 dictionaries and encyclopedias covering a wide range of topics in 50 languages.
    Just select the title that best fits your needs and click on the "download" button to get online results from the select title.

  • From the Babylon "Options" menu, at the top left corner of the Babylon client window, go to "Dictionaries" and select the "Add Dictionaries" option. A small window appears listing available dictionaries. Just select and download the title that you want. From this window you can also access Babylon's 1,200 free dictionaries and encyclopedias.




Full Text Translations

To translate texts all you need to do is Babylon Click on any word within the desired text area and Babylon will automatically capture the text surrounding the word (i.e., sentence, paragraph) and initiate the text translation service.

The Babylon results window automatically appears containing the captured text in the "Text Translation" area. Next select the 'from' and 'to' languages that you want and Babylon automatically translates the text for you.

The translated result will appear directly under the text box, allowing you to easily compare the two texts. Babylon also remembers your translation language selection making repeated translations quicker and easier. You can change the 'from' and 'to' languages at any time.



In addition, you can also directly access the text translation service from the Babylon options menu (at top left side of the client) or the arrow near the "Go" button; and paste or type in any text that you want to translate. Just select the 'from' and 'to' languages to instantly translate your text and compare it with the original.

   

Editing the Translated Text
You can easily correct or edited the text that you translated simply by selecting the edit button at the top of the text translation results section.



Manage your dictionaries list - dictionaries and encyclopedias

The dictionaries list enables you to add or remove dictionaries and control the order of the results that you receive.

You can easily access your dictionaries list from Babylon's "Options" menu by selection "Dictionaries" and then "My Dictionaries". A window appears containing your personalized list of titles both online ("Online Dictionaries") and offline ("Installed Dictionaries").

Managing your list:
Making online dictionaries available offline:
In the "Online dictionaries (require Internet Connection)" section, select the desired title and click on the download link at the top of the window. The title will automatically be downloaded and available for offline use.

Organizing your results:
The order of the titles in the "My Dictionaries" list corresponds to the order in which results appear.
To change the order of titles in the list just select the desired title and click on the "Move Up" or "Move Down" buttons at the top of the window.

To stop receiving results from a selected title:
  • Uncheck the box next to the title - this will disable results from the title, but it will remain in your list.
  • Select the title and click on the "Remove" link at the top of the window - this will permanently remove the title from your dictionaries list




Conversions - currencies, time zones and measurements

Babylon 6 includes a conversion utility that performs several types of conversions:

  • Currency: Converts currencies according to monetary exchange rates that are updated daily.
  • Time: Determines the equivalent time at different global locations according to time zones (GMT, PST), or locals (United Kingdom, Los Angeles).
  • Measurements: Calculates equivalents for common units such as angles, area, data storage, density, energy, force, kitchen measures, length, power, pressure, temperature, time, torque, velocity, volume and weight.

Getting Conversion Results:
Babylon-Click on any number or value and Babylon will display the appropriate conversion in the results window. Babylon uses the unit symbols adjacent to the value to select the best conversion unit for the number selected. For example, if you click on "$100", Babylon 6 recognizes the dollar symbol, opens the currency exchange rates with US dollars as the source currency and 100 as the source value.




Configuring Babylon

The "Configuration" menu allows you to optimize Babylon to meet your needs. You can access the configurations menu from the options menu in the client or by right clicking on the Babylon icon in your system tray (next to the computer's clock) and selection the "Configuration..." option.

Translation Tab:
  • Change your Babylon Click, default is Ctrl+Right click
  • Set keyboard activation, default is F10
  • Target languages - enables Babylon to retrieve additional results according to the target languages that you select from the drop down list. This will improve the results that you receive. You can select several languages at any one time.

Appearance Tab:
  • Allows you to control your interface language, fonts and font sizes, as well as some window displays settings.

General Tab:
  • In this tab you can control when Babylon is initiated, translation history and subscribe to Babylon's useful newsletter.

Voice tab:
  • This controls the "Say It" voice that you use to hear terms pronounced.

Licenses Tab:
  • This tab allows you to control (enter or remove) your licenses as well accessing your license details.
  • Please note that the license code is not shown but only the license ID.

Connection Tab:
  • Controls online updates and proxy settings
