Kaua'i

Kauai, the northernmost island, has a land mass of 553.3 square miles and is the fourth largest of the seven major populated Hawaiian Islands. It is also the oldest island (the age of the island, as measured by comparison of its structural lava flows, ranges from 3.8 to 5.6 million years), and has a population of about 56,000.

The island was formed by the eruption of one massive volcano. Mt. Waialeale, at 5,148 feet, is the largest remaining portion. The island's remarkable landscape includes the scenic Waimea Canyon, "the Grand Canyon of the Pacific" and the spectacular Na Pali Coast on the north shore, with cliffs rising 2,700 feet and white sand beaches scattered in clefts of the dazzling coastline. Kaua`i has some 90 miles of alternating rugged rocky coastal areas, sea cliffs and beautiful sandy beaches.

Kaua'i is known as the wettest spot on Earth, with Mount Wai'ale'ale, averaging 485 inches of rain per year. This has lead to its popular designation as "The Garden Isle.

Kauai county embraces nearby Niihau Island (73 square miles) and the tiny uninhabited islets of Kaula and Lehua.

Ni'hau

Home to approximately 250 native Hawaiians, Ni'ihau is the smallest of the populated Hawaiian Islands. It is also privately owned: Offered for sale by King Kamehameha IV in 1863, the island was purchased by Elizabeth Sinclair for $10,000. (Sinclair reportedly chose to buy the island over other choice pieces of real estate such as Waikiki, Pearl Harbor and the island of Lana'i.). Mrs. Sinclair and her adult offspring turned the entire island into a cattle and sheep ranch before moving back to Kaua'i.
