Poker Variations


Straight Poker

Originally in straight poker players are dealt five cards each and there is no draw involved there is a betting interval and the winner takes the pot, either by having the best hand at a showdown or by making the other players fold

A Well known example of straight poker is
  • Double-Barrel Shotgun
    Each player receives five cards face down. Beginning with the player to the dealer's left, all the players then expose any one of their cards. Betting intervals then alternate with further rounds of exposing one card each. On the fifth and final round of exposure, the best hand wins.

Draw Poker

In this type of game players receive all their cards at the beginning of the game and then exchange them for others during the course of the game with betting going on throughout

The most well known example of straight poker is
  • 5 Card Draw
    Each player receives five cards face down. Beginning with the player to the left of the dealer. There is a betting round after the deal then each player may exchange up to three cards. Another round of betting ensues, followed by the showdown. The winner is the player with the highest hand.

Stud Poker

In this type of game players only some of their cards at the beginning of the game and acquire more cards as the game progresses this is interspersed with rounds of betting.

The most well known example of stud poker is
  • Stud Poker
    Each player receives one card face down and one card face up (5 card stud) or 2 down 1up (7 card). Beginning with the player to the left of the dealer. There is a betting round after the deal then each player is dealt another card. There is another round of betting all cards are dealt face up except the last card. The showdown occurs after the last card is dealt and the winner has the highest hand
Shared Card Games (Texas Holdem)

This class of games includes all games in which cards are dealt up to the table which are available for shared use by all players in forming their final hands.

The most well known example of Shared poker is
  • Texas Holdem
    Each player receives two cards face down.
    2 cards down to each player, five cards down to the table. A round of betting is held after the deal and then three of the table cards are turned up. Another round of betting follows. One more table card is flipped, followed by another round of betting. The last card is flipped, a final round if betting ensues, and finally a showdown in which players make their best hands using their two pocket cards and the table's five shared cards. The winner is the player with the highest hand.
