"Manuscripts and More Made Easy." Now, users can organize images
with text in an EndNote library, and create a figure list in Word. In
addition, EndNote 9 now comes equipped with a set of built-in Word templates
that simplify the tedious task of preparing manuscripts for submission.
These features, combined with an enhanced traveling library, a more
intuitive interface, and new content files, transform EndNote 9 into even
more of an essential research tool and manuscript manager than its past
super versions.
Well known for introducing innovative features to search online
bibliographic databases, organize references, and create instant
bibliographies, EndNote 9 delivers for authors new types of bibliographies,
flexible image handling, and connectivity to explore and mobilize reference
collections.
“EndNote 9 provides important enhancements for all our users, and
establishes an international standard for global research,” said David L.
Kochalko, president, Thomson ResearchSoft. “With a new database engine,
performance improvements and Unicode, we have built a solid product for
research communities worldwide.”

Using EndNote 9 with enhanced Unicode support researchers and scholars can
import, export, cite references and create bibliographies for their papers
in any language. Users can connect to data sources around the world with
expanded record syntax and text encoding, and EndNote 9 contains 20 new MARC
formats that support native language libraries worldwide.
Enhanced Performance and Library Sharing
New benchmarks optimize performance in EndNote 9 for sorting, importing and
exporting large reference libraries. EndNote 9 offers easy portability of
customized reference field and type information for collaboration with
colleagues. These new features along with other enhancements make EndNote
the bibliographic solution for the entire spectrum of international
users—from students to professional researchers.
Features
Add, edit and display references in any language with Unicode
EndNote is now Unicode compliant, which enables you to work in languages
found around the world. Both single- and double-byte characters are rendered
perfectly in your EndNote library and flow through to your citations and
bibliography.
Organize more with new EndNote 9 library
Now you can create EndNote libraries of any size—no more limit of 32,000
references. You can enter longer abstracts and notes—50KB or 10 pages of
text in each. And EndNote 9 has added new reference types and fields to help
cite electronic references.

Instant Subject Bibliographies
Users of EndNote 9 can save steps creating a
bibliography with topic headings using EndNote’s new Subject Bibliography.
For example, users simply select the field “Author” to view a bibliography
organized by author headings. The look of a user’s subject bibliography can
be controlled by selecting a favorite output style, choosing a sort order
and a numbering scheme for the references. This feature gives users an easy
way to update their curricula vitae and reading lists.
Flexible Placement of Images from EndNote References into Microsoft
Word
Users can take advantage of EndNote’s new ability to insert a figure or
table anywhere in a Microsoft Word document. Users can now search their
EndNote libraries for images to place figures and tables within the text, or
to create figure and table lists at the end of the document, depending upon
their presentation or publisher requirements. And there are new output style
settings to specify the caption location for figures or tables.
Compatibility with Popular Word Processors Using Rich Text Format
(RTF) Files
EndNote 9 now offers the ability to create bibliographies using StarOffice,
OpenOffice, AppleWorks, FrameMaker and more. EndNote 9 scans RTF documents
containing temporary EndNote citations and creates a bibliography instantly.
EndNote 9’s RTF document scan feature lets users choose any of over 1,000
output styles to create the final bibliography.
New Connectivity of EndNote References — Palm Handheld and
Visualization Software
EndNote 9 mobilizes a user’s EndNote library on Palm® OS. Users can now
access their references anywhere, anytime. With this new connectivity, users
can search, edit and beam references as well as use the HotSync® function
with their EndNote desktop libraries.
Other features include the ability to export
files in XML format, and to move EndNote references to data visualization
tools to help users explore research literature visually. In addition,
EndNote 9 helps users locate full text faster by connecting to an
institution’s online resources with OpenURL links. With over 1,500 content
files including output styles, templates, import filters and connection
files, EndNote 9 expands the ways to collect data from a wide variety of
online resources and to publish manuscripts.
The Cite While You Write feature provides an easy way for users to search
for and insert figures into their manuscripts EndNote 9 tracks inserted
figures the same way it does references, and automatically builds a figure
list for submissions. Users can change the figure placement in the
manuscript and then update the figure list in one click.
EndNote 9 has built in Word templates that will guide users through the
exacting manuscript requirements of publishers. Completed manuscripts are
now submission-ready with all the key elements in addition to EndNote's
instantly formatted in-text citations, bibliography, and figure list.
Whether you are a researcher, writer, librarian, information specialist,
student, or consumer, who wants to create citations and bibliographies
instantly and automatically, EndNote 9 provides a nice solution. This neat program helps you control
the organization and output of bibliographies, and is a super tool that
greatly aids with the creating and editing of scientific papers,
especially the citations and the bibliography of these cited sources.
Built into this fine program are over 1,000 different bibliographical styles that a user can use to format a bibliography, and all are pre-configured according to
the many highly specific different journal
requirements. In today's research and teaching environment that heavily
emphasizes continued publishing of scholarly research, professional
journals present an important means by which this publishing
responsibility can be accomplished.
Organizing bibliographies to suit these different scientific journal
requirements can become a nightmare, especially for writers who often
publish articles in various of these journals. The different formatting styles
already built into EndNote, a feature likely to be heavily used in
research situations, are alone worth the price of the software. This means a writer can
simply select the particular journal's preferred format from among these
styles, and the journal's requisite bibliographical arrangement is then organized to suit
this specific need. Printing the attached pre-configured bibliography
follows the standard Print function in Windows. Frequent updates to this already extensive list of styles are
also provided at
the EndNote Web site, www.endnote.com.
EndNote also contains numerous connection files that contain all the
information necessary for the program to open, search and import
references -from a remote database. In addition, many import filters are
included that EndNote uses to decipher information that has been
downloaded from an online or a CD ROM database. These files are also
frequently updated at the EndNote Web site.
Essentially, EndNote is three tools in one: an online search tool, a tool
for organizing references, and a tool that allows you to create bibliographies in one step.
EndNote's connection files can be used to seamlessly access remote
bibliographic databases (e.g. MEDLINE, PsycINFO, the Library of Congress,
or university catalogs). With simple mouse clicks, you can then transfer
your results directly into an EndNote database, with no additional
importing steps.
Organizing references is also very easy, and EndNote can be considered a
personal electronic card catalog to organize references. You can even
link references to full-text articles that may be available on the Internet.
Creating bibliographies is then very easy. From within either Word (for
Mac and Windows) and WordPerfect (Windows only), you can insert citations
to references used in the writing process, and format end-paper bibliographies. Incorporating last-minute changes and
automatically updating citations and bibliographies in the paper is as simple as
choosing the Format, Bibliography command from the Tools menu in either of
these two word processors. You then select from the over 700 bibliography
styles already built into the program to format the citations and
reference lists in manuscripts, term papers or other published
articles.

Key Concepts
Millions of researchers, scholarly writers, students, and librarians
use EndNote (patent pending) to search online bibliographic databases,
organize their references and images, and create bibliographies and figure
lists instantly. Instead of spending hours typing bibliographies, or using
index cards to organize their references, they do it the easy way—by using
EndNote! EndNote for Windows and Macintosh is a valuable all-in-one tool
that integrates the following tasks into one program:
Search bibliographic databases on the Internet
Organize references and images in a database
Construct your paper with built-in manuscript templates
Watch the bibliography and figure list appear as you write!
With EndNote 9, you can work faster with increased performance, connect to
more data sources worldwide, and share customized libraries with colleagues
easily.
Search Bibliographic Databases on the Internet
Using EndNote's Connect...and Search... commands, you can search Internet
databases just as easily as you can search your EndNote database on your
computer. Simply open any of more than 560 predefined connection files and
you're online and searching. Access hundreds of remote bibliographic
databases, including Web of Science, Ovid, PubMed, the Library of Congress,
and university card catalogs from EndNote. Connect to data sources
worldwide—EndNote provides MARC formats that support native language
libraries around the world. Search remote bibliographic databases using
EndNote's simple search window—great for locating specific references.
Export reference directly from Web of Science, Highwire Press, Ovid, OCLC,
ProQuest and more. Save and load search strategies at the click of a button.
Drag and drop references instantly to your own EndNote database in one
simple step. No additional importing required.
Organize References in a Database
Create an unlimited number of databases in any size: In EndNote,
bibliographic data is entered into a record by filling out a simple template
that has the proper fields displayed for a given type of reference. There
are 37 customizable reference types with up to 52 fields for entering
reference and image data. And you can organize references in any
Unicode-supported language.
Organize images, too: Organize images including charts, figures and
equations with a caption and your own keywords.
Customize the references database display: Click-sort column heading, adjust
column widths, choose fields to display.
Preview formatted references: Using the Preview pane in the database window,
you can preview selected references in over 1300 bibliographic styles.
Includes hundreds of import filters: There are many sources of
bibliographic data that can be used to help you build your EndNote database
of references. EndNote includes hundreds of customizable import filters for
a variety of online and CD-ROM database providers (e.g. Ovid,
SilverPlatter). You can create your own import filters as well. Once you've
downloaded the references in a tagged format, choose the appropriate import
filter to import the data into your EndNote database.
Link your EndNote records to PDF files on the Web or on your hard drive:
Link your references to full-text articles or other material on the Web, or
PDF files on your hard drive using EndNote's "Link To" command. By selecting
the Open Link... command, EndNote automatically starts your Web browser or
application (i.e., Acrobat Reader) and presents the linked file for viewing.
Use Term Lists for consistent data entry: Term Lists store glossaries of
keywords, author names, or any other terms that are important to managing
your references. As you enter new terms, EndNote suggests terms from these
lists to facilitate data entry and to ensure terms are entered consistently.
Pre-defined Journal Term Lists are provided for biomedicine, chemistry, and
the humanities—complete with common abbreviations of journal names used in
bibliographies.
Searching: The Search... command in EndNote offers a high degree of
flexibility and control in designing searches. You can limit your searches
to specific fields such as Author name, Year, or Keywords. You can also
choose a general search, one that searches on all fields in a database.
Global Editing: Use the Change Text, Change Field, and Move Field commands
to modify existing references. These commands can automatically add a term
to all or some of your references. These are useful tools for labeling
groups of references as well as for fixing common typos or spelling
mistakes.
Sorting: In EndNote, you can sort references on any fields you choose such
as Year, Journal, Title, or Label. You can sort on up to five fields in
either ascending or descending order. You can do an instant sort by clicking
on the column headings in the reference database window.
Customize Settings: The settings for customizing your EndNote database
display, bibliographic preferences, and other options are organized in one
easy-to-access Preferences panel.
Running EndNote on a Network: Use EndNote on a network and share databases
across mixed platforms.
Use Microsoft Word Templates to Create Your Manuscript
EndNote includes built-in Word templates to guide you through the exacting
manuscript requirements of publishers. You can select a predefined template
from the Word > File > New dialog menu or from the EndNote > Tools menu to
begin your publishing process. A Wizard is ready to assist you with the
creation of a new manuscript. Completed manuscripts are now submission-ready
with all the key elements in addition to EndNote’s instantly formatted
in-text citations, bibliography and figure list.
Watch Bibliographies Appear as You Write!
Create instant bibliographies in Microsoft Word: Locate citations in
Microsoft Word with Cite While You Write technology. Watch the bibliography
appear as you insert citations in your manuscript.
Collaborate with colleagues easily: Collaborate easily with others as your
traveling library of cited references follows the Microsoft Word document.
When you're ready to send your paper to colleagues, the references travel
with it. You can also capture references directly from colleagues’ papers to
use in your EndNote library with the export traveling library feature.
EndNote handles even the trickiest bibliographic details: EndNote includes
bibliographic features that address a wide range of formatting issues in the
humanities, biomedicine, physical, life, and social sciences. Here are some
of the advanced formatting features EndNote handles with ease: * Shortened
forms of references in footnotes, including "Ibid." * Group multiple
references under one bibliography number * Numbered text notes within a
bibliography * Options for anonymous works * Hanging indent option *
Capitalization options for author names or title
Includes more than 1,300 bibliographic styles: EndNote comes with more than
1,300 predefined bibliographic styles for the leading journals. Each style
can be modified, or you can create new styles.
Target Customers
Although one could consider loading and using this fine program on a home
PC, EndNote is really more suited for a library environment,
research institutes, laboratories, or other information publishing and
research functions. The focus is on professional writing that
would more likely be published in scholarly journals, research papers,
theses and dissertations, or grant research reports. Graduate students
will be very interested in the many features in this program that will
answer most all their citation and bibliography formatting and printing needs.
