Functional Training
Functional training provides the basic training that is needed
in order to use Voyager for searching and navigating the system
and for learning the basic functionality of the core Voyager
modules (Acquisitions/Serials, Cataloging, Circulation, and
WebVoyáge).
Functional Training is designed to provide a solid understanding
of how Voyager works as an integrated system. Library trainers,
library decision makers, technology leaders, and individuals
at smaller libraries who may be fulfilling multiple responsibilities
or roles are strongly encouraged to attend the entire four-day
Functional Training session.
Understanding the relationship between modules and data in
the integrated Voyager library system is crucial during the
conversion period, and Functional Training provides this foundation.
While not all participants will be experts on every library
function touched on in the class, the class encourages better
decision making by expanding staff understanding about Voyager’s
integrated nature and its effect on library workflow, library
policies and practice, reference work, bibliographic instruction,
etc.
This is a necessary class for library staff who will be involved
in data review and systems administration. It is also the
introductory Voyager class for library staff who may serve
as trainers for the institution. We find that this class is
also helpful to library managers and technology leaders who
might be called upon to develop, review, or approve changes
to library policy and practice as a result of the Voyager implementation.
Participants will come away from the functional training with
a solid overview of the core Voyager modules and will be prepared
for the more advanced classes.
Audience: Participants in data review; library managers responsible
for configuration decisions at each library; library trainers;
library technology leaders; operational staff working in more
than one library functional area.
Class Length: 4 days duration
Prerequisites: Basic Windows skills
Class Size: Limited to 10 individuals (repeats available)
Room Requirements:: Teaching workstation with projection capability;
one hands-on workstation for each trainee
Voyager Overview Demonstration
This is a half-day demonstration of the Voyager system for
large groups of library staff. The purpose is to introduce
library staff to the new system, particularly WebVoyáge. In
addition, each core module is briefly covered. The demonstration
is process-driven in that attendees can watch a book’s evolution
in the system from the point of order, to receiving and payment,
to cataloging, to shelving, to circulation. The same approach
is used to demonstrate serials holdings control and circulation
desk activities. Members of the library staff come away from
the demonstrations with a sense of the look and feel of Voyager,
its terminology and record structure, and some understanding
about the integrated design of Voyager.
These sessions are a great way to launch a Voyager all-staff
training program. They also serve as a useful introduction/overview
of the system for library staff attending modular classes but
not the four-day functional training, or for computer services
staff who need a basic overview of a system for which they
have a critical support role.
Audience: Any member of the library staff. Computer services
staff can also benefit.

Voyager Reports: Pre-packaged and Library Customizations
The Voyager system comes with a number of pre-packaged cataloging
reports that are created using the Reporter Client. In addition,
dozens of customized reports can be generated using MS Access
to send queries to the Voyager database.
At some libraries, library staff request basic help on configuring
and using both the Reporter client and MS Access. If desired,
this basic training can be delivered in a single day. Topics
include an overview of Voyager reporting capabilities, customizing
the pre-packaged forms to display or print the Library’s logo
and/or header, loading and configuring the ODBC drivers, getting
comfortable with the printed reporting tools (database dictionary
and entity-relationship diagrams), and using the pre-packaged
report queries.
Many libraries request training on using MS Access to develop
sophisticated queries against the Voyager database and then
massaging the results within MS Access. This training can
be delivered in two days. Tools, concepts, and processes are
covered in the course of class, utilizing considerable hands-on
experience to drive home the techniques and concepts. In the
first day, hands-on exercises lead participants through the
essential concepts. By the second day, participants are increasingly
able to develop sophisticated queries on their own.
