Alaska halibut caught on Kodiak island in larsen bay alaska

Kodiak Island Halibut fishing

Halibut fishing is one of the most exciting saltwater adventures that Alaska has to offer.  If barn-door halibut are what you are after then Kodiak Adventures located in Larsen Bay Alaska is the place for you.  The best thing about halibut fishing here is that we do not have far boat rides or super deep water to fish like other places in Alaska. Most of our fishing is done in protected bays that average 60-180 feet deep.  Halibut fishing starts in June and runs thru December, with the peak time July and August.  The average halibut weighs 50 pounds with 150 pound fish common and a 400+ pound fish possible.  After a day of water fowling what could be better than dropping a jig into the depths, to fight the mighty Halibut.  The fall and winter are not the best time to fish for these wonderful fighters, but these tasty game fish are available through out the year.  Halibut are caught in 75-175 ft of water on rocky bottoms and ledges of the surrounding bays.  Winter halibut are not as big as the summer fish, only weighing 15-25 lbs, but that's fine as this size fish are the best eating.

Kodiak Salt Water Salmon Fishing Larsen Bay Alaska
Troll caught king salmon off kodiak island in June

Silver salmon kick off the saltwater salmon fishing here in early August lasting in September.  These acrobatic aggressive fish travel in large schools and average 10-15 pounds.  We troll cut plug herring and spoons to locate the fish then use fly rods and light spinning rods to spice up the fun.  The limit is five fish per person per day and limits are the norm, fresh salmon is not a problem here.  Kings, did somebody say kings?  Yes, that's right salt water kings start showing up here in mid September and the bite is on thru January.  We troll for these monster salmon and the best thing about king fishing that the best fishing in within sight of the lodge.  These fish average 20 - 25 pounds and 30-40 pound fish caught each year.  To fish for kings you will need a king stamp that is available in Kodiak.  After a morning of duck or deer hunting take a hour and relax while trolling for the King of Salmon.
