Sea Angling

For the sea angler, Mayo offers top class boat and shore fishing. The main deep sea angling centres are Killala, Belmullet, Achill, Newport and Westport. All along the coast there are boats for hire for a whole or half-day, with excellent skippers, who are only too happy to advise. For a group especially, chartering a boat represents great value. Prices range from €40(min 4 persons) per individual. Chartering a boat for the day costs around €150 to €200 per group. Numerous sea angling competitions are fished annually and, in recent years, up to 34 species of fish have been recorded. Shore angling is becoming increasingly popular with fishing carried out from numerous shores, beaches and piers. The best stands are sign posted.

Clew Bay has a growing reputation as one of Ireland's top venues for specimen skate

The North Western Region, with its miles of coastline and rich sea, is an ideal place for sea angling. For those who have never gone sea fishing before, the waters off the Mayo and Sligo coastline are by far the best place to begin. Mayo’s celebrated angling centre is Westport, on the doorstep of Clew Bay. The many islands in the bay offer shelter from winds, and make the sea angling experience extremely pleasant.

Belmullet, on the Erris Peninsula, is possibly one of the best all-round sea angling centres in Ireland. Its wonderful sheltered waters, with Blacksod Bay to the South and Broad Haven Bay to the North are home to over 30 kinds of fish. Each bay has its own charter boat fishing operation with several approved boats to choose from. Achill Island faces Blacksod, and it too is a delight for anglers, offering shark fishing.
