The Burrishoole Fishery

The Burrishoole Fishery is located on the North side of Clew Bay about 6 km northwest of the town of Newport Co. Mayo. It consists of two beautifully scenic lakes, Loughs Furnace and Feeagh.130 and 320 ha respectively. In recent years L. Feeagh has been closed to anglers in order to conserve the runs of wild salmon into the system. Lough Furnace is however open for business and gets a prolific run of grilse, some wild and some originating from a major smolt ranching programme which has been established in Burrishoole for many years.

The Marine Institute of Ireland has a major fisheries research centre based at Burrishoole and the staff from the research station also run the salmon ranching programme.

Salmon fishing on L. Furnace begins around the first or second week of June and most of the angling takes place from boats which can be booked through the Fishery Manager.
