Robert M. Mason, DMD.,PhD

Congratulations to Robert M. Mason, DMD., PhD recipient of the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association (ACPA) "2006 Distinguished Service Award". This award was presented April 2006 in Vancouver B.C. at the national meeting of the Association, for Dr. Mason's outstanding service to the programs of the ACPA. ACPA is a multidisciplinary group comprised of plastic surgeons, dental specialists, geneticists, speech-language pathologists, nurses, social workers, and others involved in team care for clefts and craniofacial malformations. Dr. Mason served as President of ACPA in 1995 and 1996.

Distinguished service should be Dr. Mason's middle name; he actively serves in the areas of speech, dentistry and orofacial myology. He continues to participate with cleft/craniofacial care as a member of the Duke Cleft Palate Program. Dr. Mason (Bob) is a long time active member of the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM). He actively supports IAOM: as an advisor, as a member of the IJOM staff with his research and with his willingness to help other members. We are proud to say Dr. Mason is one of us.

- WHERE WE'VE BEEN -

On the Educational Front Line

Joy Moeller, BS, RDH, COM. was selected to be a featured speaker at the Mid-Winter Dental Convention in Kansas City, an event sponsored by the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The convention ran from March 17th through March 19th 2006. Approximately 5000 dentists and hygienists from Illinois, Iowa, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas and Kansas attended the Convention. IAOM member Katie Elder submitted Joy's name and credentials to the Convention planning committee, they were pleased to include Joy's three hour presentation, "Overview of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy" as part of the Convention program.

On March 18th Joy presented her program, " An Overview of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy" to approximately 125 attendees. At the conclusion of the presentation, Dr. Chester Eastin, an orthodontist in the audience from San Antonio, Texas strongly advocated the treatment of people with myofunctional disorders. He stated he couldn't straighten most teeth without using some myofunctional therapy, he also recommended the audience utilize this form of treatment in conjunction with orthodontic or TMD treatment. Dr. Eastin has used myofunctional therapy in his orthodontic practice since 1964.

Everyone attending Joy's lecture received literature about IAOM and the IAOM Annual Convention in Los Angeles. Lecturing at conventions, according to Joy, is a very good way to "Spread The Word".

Orofacial Myology on the Cover Page

Orofacial Myology made it all the way to the front cover of Advance Magazine for SLP's. The topic of OFM as the bridge between speech and the dental professionals, presented by Dianne Fonssagrives and Licia Paskey at the ASHA convention last November, was chosen as the cover story in the Advance Jan 23 issue.

IAOM members Sandra Holtzman, MA., COM and her associate Andreia Rodriques, SLP, represented Neo-Health Services, Inc. at the November 2005 convention.

Holtzman and Rodriques used the ASHA convention as an opportunity to educate attendees and also to collect data regarding the depth of their knowledge about oral myofunctional disorders. Holtzman and Rodriques reported, "many attendees entered our booth, read the literature, watched our DVD, or spoke with us, the great majority expressed interest in learning more". Please go to the Members Contribution Page, you will a find a full report of their findings. Don't miss this interesting article!
