Although ADSL and cable are the most wide used technologies to provide high-speed Internet access, other technologies do exist. These include a number of variations of DSL (Digital Subscriber Line):

  • HDSL (High bit-rate DSL)
  • RADSL (Rate-adaptive DSL)
  • SDSL (Symmetric DSL)
  • VDSL (Very High Speed DSL)

The above DSL services all leverage the phone network but differ from ADSL in their connection speeds, ability to provide concurrent phone calls, distance-to-exchange requirements and costs.

Wireless broadband Internet services is another option available for high-speed Internet connectivity. It uses a network of transmitters and receivers to transmit Internet data via radio signals to homes and businesses.

Satellite broadband Internet service is an alternative that uses geostationary satellites and satellite dishes to provide high-speed Internet access. It is of particular interest to people in rural or remote areas where alternative broadband delivery methods are unavailable.
