Definition

At present, there is no universally accepted definition of what constitutes broadband Internet access. In general, the term “broadband” implies the following:

  1. fast Internet access

  2. an "always on" connection

  3. a flat monthly usage fee

A fast Internet connection is generally considered to be at least five times (5x)as fast as a conventional dial-up connection (i.e. 256 kbit/sec). Many people people feel that the threshold is actually much higher (20x or more).

The most common channels for providing broadband access are via ADSL and cable. Less widely used methods include other types of DSL services, satellite and wireless technologies.
