In response to a Congressional mandate requiring federal agencies to migrate from paper-based to electronic systems, the NIH has undertaken the eRA project to lower costs and administrative effort, expedite extramural grants processing, and provide better quality information to the NIH and the external grantee community. The eRA project is a collaborative endeavor of the full NIH community. The intention is that ultimately, all parties involved will conduct seamless, secure, interactive business.

ETSU is a registered institution.  At this time, Principle Investigators (currently funded PIs or PIs who will submit grant proposals to the NIH in the future) can register to set up a personal “account”. The term "account" as used by the NIH Commons is a personal account that one would use to log into the NIH Commons and therefore be identified by using a combination of username and password.  

Users will eventually be able to review the current status of all their grant applications, review detailed information associated with the grant, submit grant applications, and review grant applications, as well as other activities. • Change in Time of Submission/Receipt of NIH Electronic Grant Applications to Grants.gov- Effective April 1, 2006, electronic grant applications must be successfully received no later than 5:00 p.m. local time by Grants.gov (http://www.grants.gov/) in order to be considered “on time.” This change applies to ALL electronic grant applications submitted to NIH through Grants.gov, including SBIR and STTR applications due April 1, 2006.

• NIH Adjusts Timeline for Electronic Application Submission to Provide Additional Time Before the R01 Transition- After considering input from the applicant community, analyzing the results of the first few submission rounds, and examining the timing of key submission dates in relation to other NIH initiatives, NIH has adjusted the implementation timeline for electronic application submission to provide an additional four months (one submission round) before the transition of the NIH traditional research grant (R01) mechanism and all subsequent mechanisms.
