Travel Insurance

International Health Insurance Plans seem to be divided into four types:

1) Individual Health Insurance Plans Based in the U.S.
These are not designed for extended international travel. Basically, you must keep a "permanent" U.S. address since your premium is based on the state you live in, and not tip them off to how long you've actually been out of the country. Some of them will only reimuburse for treatment of "life-threatening" illnesses or injuries that occur overseas.

2) "Trip Insurance" or "Short-term Travel Insurance"
It's often difficult to travel insurancefind a plan that will cover you for more than 180 days. Sometimes they are renewable, sometimes not. These plans work better as a supplement to major medical insurance plans. They are not really designed as primary medical plans. If you're on a tight budget, this can be a cheap way to get some coverage.

3) Long-term International Health Insurance without Coverage in Your Home Country
Designed for trips, but do not offer much coverage once you've returned to your home country. These aren't too bad, unless you contract some awful, protracted illness abroad that requires a longer course of treatment once you return. These plans sometimes have "home country" clauses or riders that provide limited treatment upon return to your home country.

4) Long-term International Health Insurance with Coverage in Your Home Country
I only found two plans that do this. One is offered by International Medical Group and the other is Premier One, a plan offered by International Health Insurance, a Danish company. The first one, IMG, keeps your policy going upon your return to your home country for the duration of the policy. A PPO network can be used in the U.S., which accepts co-pays.

Insurance Guide

1. Insurance Document: You should read this carefully. It gives full details of what is and is not covered and the conditions of the cover. Cover can vary from one policy to another so you should familiarise yourself with this particular insurance.

2. Conditions and Exclusions: Specific Conditions and Exclusions apply to individual Sections of your insurance, whilst General Exclusions and Conditions will apply to the whole of your insurance.

3. Health: This insurance contains restrictions regarding pre-existing medical problems concerning the health of the people travelling and of other people upon whose health the trip depends. You are advised to read the document carefully.

4. Property Claims: These claims are paid based on the value of the goods at the time you lose them and not on a 'new for old' or replacement cost basis. Allowance will be made for their age and likely condition.

5. Limits: This insurance has limits on the amount the insurer will pay under each Section. Some Sections also include specific limits, for example, for any one item or for valuables in total.

6. Excesses: Under some Sections of this insurance, claims will be subject to an excess. This means you are not insured for any small loss that falls within the amount shown.

7. Reasonable Care: You need to take all reasonable care to protect yourself and your property, as you would if you were not insured. Any amounts the insurers will pay for property left unattended in a public place or unattended vehicle is very limited, as specified in the wording.

8. Dangerous Sports and Adventure Trips: You may not be insured if you are going to take part in dangerous sports or adventure trip where there is generally recognised risk of injury. Please check that this insurance covers you, or ask us.

9. Cooling-off Period: This insurance contains a 7 day 'cooling off' period during which you can return it and get a full refund if you have a justifiable reason for being dissatisfied with the cover, provided you have not travelled and there are no claims.

The Basics Of Travel Iinsurance

While travel insurance was formerly looked upon as a luxury, consumers concerned about whether their vacations can be canceled by incidents outside their control, or worried about the quality of medical care in the area they are visiting, now view travel insurance as a good value. Generally, a comprehensive travel insurance policy costs 5 to the basics of travel iinsurance7 percent of the price of your trip.

Before buying travel insurance, be sure you don't already have sufficient coverage through your home insurance, health insurance, or as a perk on your credit card if you charged your trip.

A travel insurance policy usually offers two coverages: trip cancellation/interruption and emergency medical evacuation. Reimbursements for lost baggage or trip delays are nice if they come bundled with trip cancellation/interruption or emergency medical evacuation, but they're usually not good buys on their own. If you have absolutely no health insurance, or if your health plan won't cover you at all while you're abroad, then you should look into medical or hospital coverage. Be sure to check your health insurance policy carefully.

Trip cancellation/interruption coverage will reimburse you for any nonrefundable deposits you put down on a trip or cruise if it turns out that you won't be able to go after all, or if you have to leave early. The catch? It will only pay out if you have to cancel or leave early because of a covered reason. That's why it's so important to read the fine print. Some policies will cover only medical reasons (say you're admitted to the hospital), and some will not cover pre-existing medical conditions (like an old back injury flaring up).

Travel insurance FAQ

Q - Can I extend the duration of my insurance, after I have commenced travelling?
A - Yes, by paying the extra months rate shown in the premium table. However, you must make any extensions before the original term of your policy has lapsed. Cover must be continuous and we cannot backdate extensions. You must also bear in mind that if you have, for instance, an ongoing medical claim at the time the renewal becomes due the insurers can refuse to extend or agree to extend only on condition that no further payments will be made relating to that particular claim. This is the main disadvantage of taking a shorter period at the outset and extending later as you run the risk of having continuing medical bills to pay yourself.

Q - Am I covered for motorcycling?
A - Yes. On gold and diamond policies, you are covered under all sections except for Personal Liability. Your medical expenses will be covered under the Medical Expenses section.

International Hot Air Balloon Week

08 Jan 2005 (annual) The tiny village of Filzmoos, south of Salzburg, is the ultimate location for high-profile ballooning contests. Every January since 1980 teams from all over the globe have made the pilgrimage to the amazing Salzburger Sportwelt Amadé ski resort to transform the sky into a sea of bright colours.
Two main factors account for Filzmoos' status as a pilgrimage site for balloonists - the challenging winds off the surrounding mountains and the fact that enthusiasts can take off from the middle of the village.

The event draws thousands of people from the pistes to Filzmoos and it's not hard to see why. The premier race is the Night of Balloons on the second day of the festival.

Travel Health

In-flight health
Dr Rob Hicks
As more people take to the air on business or holiday, it's unfortunate that for some the first port of call on landing is the doctor.

Major medical problems
Preparing for travelling, long waits at the airport, customs and baggage handling, often mean that people become stressed very easily. Add to this existing medical conditions and the recipe for trouble is complete.

Fortunately in-flight medical emergencies are not common.travel health However, around one in every 20,000 passengers does suffer something serious - heart and lung problems account for 25 per cent of these problems.

Causes of in-flight problems
dehydration
immobility
reduced oxygen availability
air expansion
The amount of oxygen available within the cabin may be slightly less than normal air. Although this difference will be tolerated well by most people, those who already suffer from heart or lung problems may find that this triggers their symptoms. People with angina, for example, may find they experience angina chest pains because the heart isn't getting enough oxygen, or those with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may find their breathing a little harder or wheezy.

Too much coffee or alcohol can cause an irregular heart rhythm or palpitations to develop, especially if this has happened before.

Blood clots in the legs or in the lungs tend to make themselves known once the flight is over. Prolonged immobility and dehydration during the flight make these more likely.

Travel Budget

Travel Plan

Travels requested under travel plan the STF travel budget must be planned in advance. The initial travel plan is agreed during the Preparatory Meeting.

For each mission travel, the travel plan should contain the following information, with the best possible knowledge available when the travel is requested:

  • Subject of the meeting
  • Expert(s) traveling
  • Location (country/city)
  • Date / duration (the exact days may not be yet known but the duration must be identified)
New travels can be agreed within the limits of the budget available. The travel plan includes an estimate of the provisional cost, which is updated by the Secretariat with the information of the actual cost of the travels already done. In order to improve the accuracy of the estimate and allow the best possible use of the travel budget, it is essential that the reimbursement is claimed as soon as possible after the travel or, if this is not possible, to inform the Secretariat of the amount that will be claimed.

Entry Requirements

Citizens of the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and most European nations may visit Costa Rica for a maximum of 90 days. No visa is necessary, but you must have a valid passport, which you should carry with you at all times while you're in Costa Rica. Citizens of Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand can enter the country without a visa and stay for 30 days, although once in the country visitors can apply for an extension.

If you overstay your visa or entry stamp, you will have to pay around $45 for an exit visa. If you need to get an exit visa, a travel agent in San Jose can usually get one for you for a small fee and save you the hassle of dealing with Immigration. If you want to stay longer than the validity of your entry stamp or visa, the easiest thing to do is cross the border into Panama or Nicaragua for 72 hours and then re-enter Costa Rica on a new entry stamp or visa. However, be careful. Periodically, the Costa Rican government has cracked down on "perpetual tourists," and if it notices a continued pattern of exits and entries designed simply to support an extended stay, it may deny you re-entry.

If you need a visa or have other questions about Costa Rica, you can contact any of the following Costa Rican embassies or consulates: in the United States, 2112 S St. NW, Washington, DC 20008 (tel. 202/234-2945; www.costarica-embassy.org); in Canada, 325 Dalhousie St., Suite 407, Ottawa, Ontario K1N 5TA (tel. 613/562-2855); in Great Britain, 14 Lancaster Gate, London, England W2 3LH (tel. 0207/706-8844). There are no Costa Rican embassies in Australia or New Zealand, but you could try contacting the honorary consul in Sydney, Australia at: De la Sala House, 30 Clarence St., 11th floor, Sydney NSW 2000 (tel. 02/9261-1177).

Asia's Budget Airlines In Price War

A fierce price war has erupted in Southeast Asia's budget airline market, and consumers are enjoying the spoils.

One-way tickets from Singapore to popular destinations like Bangkok have been offered for less than one US dollar each in promotions as low-cost carriers slug it out to gain market share and capture public attention. Newcomer Tiger Airways fired the first shot by offering one-way tickets to three Thai destinations for 59 cents. Thai Air Asia retaliated with a 29-cent one-way ticket to Bangkok.

"AirAsia tames even the wildest tiger with low fares," the Malaysia-based Air Asia group screamed in a full-page newspaper advertisement.

The price war is good news to travel-hungry Asians who in the past had to contend with the fares charged by full-service carriers. For instance, a return ticket to Bangkok from Singapore with a full-service carrier can easily set one back by an average of $250. Southeast Asians are now however spoilt for choice as budget airlines proliferate in the region's increasingly crowded skies.

New Restrictions For Budget Airfares

Several major airlines have announced new rules and restrictions for budget airfares. Most changes apply to everyone except business and first class travelers. Examples include:

Paper ticket fees: Major USnew restrictions for budget airfares airlines now charge around 25 dollars for paper tickets. Travel agents who issue paper tickets must collect these fees on behalf of the airlines. In the past, agencies have recommended paper tickets because they can be easier than electronic tickets to change. If a flight is canceled or delayed, you have a negotiable document in your hands. Now, airlines are trying to limit passengers' control over their flight plans.

Non-refundable ticket policy: Changes to nonrefundable tickets must be made at least 24 hours prior to departure. In the past, the value of the ticket could be used toward future travel within one year. Now you can only do this if you book a new ticket at least 24 hours before the original departure flight. Otherwise, the ticket expires and it's truly nonrefundable

Calculation of airfares: In the "old days" (last month), round-trip airfares were based on the departure date from the US. Travel agents encouraged people to leave just before high season to benefit from a lower airfare. Not so anymore. Northwest has announced if you leave in low season and return in high season, the airfare will be calculated based on the season in each direction.

Carry-on and standby fees: Airlines are beginning to charge for extra carryon baggage. Standby rules are also changing. Some airlines now charge a 100 dollar change fee for standing by on flights departing the same days as your ticketed flight.

Travel Shopping in Milan

We can begin our itinerary from the heart of the luxury shopping area in Milan: Via travel shopping in milan Montenapoleone, Via della Spiga and Via Sant'Andrea , elegant streets that together with Via Manzoni , Via Borgospesso and Via Santo Spirito are the outer limits of the famous Fashion Quadrilatero . This area contains the most prestigious boutiques and showrooms in the world, full of minimalist design and high tech, that follow on without any nd to this continuity, and provide a triumph of consumer stimulus that only a select few can respond to. In this square area, that is really extremely expensive, luxury is the true protagonist. Dazzling jewels created by the most famous name, clothes and accessories to die for, to be owned and flaunted, shoes that are works of art. Everything reeks of ostentation and the splendor of a chic, fashionable lifestyle. Many foreign tourists come to the showrooms and come out full of parcels, because Italian fashion continues to attract and fascinate the whole world, and Milan is the most representative symbol of all this.

Budget Airlines: a great way to lose money

The global airline industry is one of the most remarkably consistent ways for investors to lose money. Airline executive Robert Crandall put it succinctly two years ago when he said: "The airline industry has lost as much money as it has made since the Wright brothers invented manned flight in Kitty Hawk back in 1903."

Crandall should know. He is the former chairman of American Airlines, the world's largest airline. American narrowly avoided going to bankruptcy court last month after a last minute agreement in which staff agreed to deep pay cuts.

United Airlines, the world's second biggest carrier is already in bankruptcy.

Matters are little better in Europe. The national flag carriers were already in a deep malaise at the end of the 1990s, even before the hammer blows of September 11, war in Iraq and the SARS epidemic scared away passengers and raised costs.

The airline industry worldwide was already expecting to lose $2.5bn even before September 11, and in the event lost $18bn that year. In 2002 it lost $13bn, and may lose a similar amount this year.

Time up for the flag carriers?

"If SARS takes hold in Europe, it could be 'game over' for some of the flag carriers," Goldman Sachs analyst Hugo Scott-Gall said in a recent research note. "Even if it doesn't, anaemic economic growth won't paper over the industry's structural problems."
