common use of a digital certificate is to verify that a user sending a message
is who he or she claims to be, and to provide the receiver with the means to encode
a reply.
An individual wishing to send an encrypted message applies for a digital certificate
from a Certificate Authority (CA). The CA issues an encrypted digital certificate
containing the applicant's public key and a variety of other identification information.
The CA makes its own public key readily available through print publicity or perhaps
on the Internet.
The recipient of an encrypted message uses the CA's public key to decode the
digital certificate attached to the message, verifies it as issued by the CA and
then obtains the sender's public key and identification information held within
the certificate. With this information, the recipient can send an encrypted reply.

What is the electronic marketplace?
Electronic markets ordinarily refer to online trading and auctions, such as
online stock trading markets, online auctions for computers and other goods. The
electronic marketplace refers to the emerging market economy where producers,
intermediaries and consumers interact electronically or digitally in some way.
The electronic marketplace is a virtual representative of physical markets. The
economic activities undertaken by this electronic marketplace collectively represent
the digital economy. Electronic business, broadly defined, is concerned with the
electronic marketplace.
The electronic marketplace resembles physical markets (the one we know) in
many aspects. As in physical markets, components of the digital economy include:
- players (market agents such as firms, suppliers, brokers, shops and consumers)
- products (goods, food, and services)
- processes (supply, production, marketing, competition, distribution, consumption,
etc.).
The difference is that, in the electronic marketplace, at least some of these
components are electronic, digital, virtual or online . For example, a digital
player is someone with an email or a Web page. Purely "physical" sellers
may be selling a digital product, e.g. digital CD-ROM. One that sells physical
products at a physical store may offer product information online (thereby allowing
consumers to "search online"), while production, ordering, payment and
delivery are done conventionally. Currently, the emphasis is on the core of the
electronic marketplace where everything (i.e. all value chains or business activities)
is online.

Who controls the supply chain?
The answers to these questions are unclear. These and other uncertainties have
caused significant supply chain disruptions, inefficiencies and added cost.
Conflicts between OEMs and contract manufacturers over buying practices have
become common nowadays. Meanwhile, many suppliers simply don't know who to sell
to-or even how to sell-anymore.
In the new electronics supply chain, authority over purchasing decisions increasingly
is distributed among OEMs and their contract manufacturers.
To understand how this divided authority works, we can use Shapely values,
a tool from game theory . Shapely values are calculable and objective representations
of power distribution among independent groups. These values are represented as
fractions of 1, where any coalition achieving a value greater than 0.5 can dictate
terms to everyone else.
The chart at the top of the page shows Shapely values applied to electronics
purchasing decision-making power when dealing with multisourced parts. The OEM
or wholesale dealer purchasing column shows, on the left, how power is distributed
when there is no contract manufacturing involvement--the status quo for most supply
chains before the major outsourcing trend began.

Online Trading: Dream vs. Reality
 A
couple of years ago, I reported on a large study that offered compelling evidence
that individual investors can beat the market -- as long as they adopt a buy-and-hold
approach. Undertaken by Brad Barber and Terrance Odean, business school professors
at the University of California at Davis, that study showed how frequent trading
simply kills investment performance, even before figuring in trading expenses
and taxes. One reason is that investors tend to be overconfident, thinking they're
smarter than they really are. The stocks they sell generally end up doing better
than the stocks they buy as replacements.
The answer seems to be yes, a big yes based on a follow-up paper from the very
same Barber and Odean. This new study deals with a subset of online investors
who were part of the original data set. So again, it's a somewhat dated sampling.
Still, the most reasonable extrapolation from this work is that online stock exchange
is particularly perilous because it encourages exactly the kind of active trading
that produces poor investment returns. Indeed, Barber and Odean show that merely
switching from telephone-based trading through a broker to online trading via
a computer can turn very good investors into bad investors. So this is a cautionary
tale for just about everybody reading this.
