mediaBranding is more than just ensuring that customers recognize a logo or product name. Branding means creating an emotional association (such as the feeling of success, happiness, or relief) that customers forms with the product, service, or company. There are two basic techniques for branding: direct experience and indirect messaging.

With direct-experience branding, users attribute emotions directly. For example, when customers test drive a car or eat a restaurant meal, their direct experience influences their feelings toward that vehicle or establishment.

However, marketers can't give users a direct experience for most products and services, so they need to use indirect messaging for their branding. For example, Nike sponsors sporting events to encourage the attendees to associate Nike products with the fun and excitement of the sport. Companies also create slogans and use them everywhere. TV commercials, magazine ads, and billboards are all indirect messaging. But this form of branding needs repeated exposure — conventional advertising wisdom says that a message isn't effective until the customer has received it at least 10 times.

What is the Call Centre?

The Call Centre is a small unit within the Department of Educational Studies, in the Faculty of Education, The University of Edinburgh. The Centre is co-located with the Scottish Sensory Centre, offering a rich one-stop resource. CALL is both a Service and a Research Unit. Service activity is limited by the amount of staff time available, but is open to anyone in Scotland concerned with communication difficulties, particularly in a learning context.

New technology has much to offer people with physical, communication or sensory difficulties. Computers and computer-based aids have become smaller, cheaper and more practical and can be readily adapted to provide disabled people with access to communication, education, recreation and employment. Communication systems with synthesised or digitized voice offer a means of communication for those who cannot speak; switches and other devices can be used by people with physical disabilities as an alternative to a standard computer keyboard; enlarged displays or voice feedback offer computer access to those with visual impairments; specialised software helps people with writing or spelling difficulties. `Low-technology´ systems such as picture or symbol books can be valuable too.

However, the wide range of possibilities means that choosing and using these technologies with particular individuals can be complex and sometimes daunting. The Call Centre addresses these problems and works to help people with disabilities (and their carers and professional helpers) get the most from this new technology.

streaming mediaStreaming media is scary. Despite the ever growing use of streaming media, I still find a great deal of intimidation in Web producers when it comes to working with streaming media. HTML seems easier to understand than transmitting an audio or video signal to the other side of the world. In their mind, streaming media borders on pure wizardry.

But streaming media is easy. These days, it is simple to create and to implement in your Web site. In fact most producers will find it far less intimidating than their first work with HTML or JavaScript. The only challenge is in understanding the range of choices and directions the streaming media industry offers.

Over the next several weeks, I'm going to be your tour guide through the world of streaming media. We'll start with the basics. What is streaming media? How does it work? Where are the standards? Where is it going? We'll take a look at the major players. We'll look at Windows Media Technologies, QuickTime, and RealNetworks. How do you make something in a particular streaming format? Streaming media is "just-in-time" delivery of multimedia information. It is typically applied to compressed multimedia formats delivered over the Internet. It does not try to reassemble as many bits associated with video content as binary computer file formats do. (Compare AVI)
