Understanding rabbit food labels

Complete - Nutritionally complete. Theoretically can be fed alone, but we always recommend feeding hay as well. Be warned - there are some very dubious rabbit foods labelled as "complete" which are nothing of the sort. Stick to a reputable and well known brand. If you are forced to feed a complete food by itself because your rabbit won't eat hay, check that fibre is at least 18–20% and protein 12-15%. Complete foods are only complete if the rabbit eats every single bit of it. Example - Russell Rabbit

Complementary - Require the addition of hay and sometimes green food to provide a balanced diet. Most British rabbit foods are complementary; many foods labelled as "complete" should really be labelled as complementary!

Rabbit Mix (also called coarse mix) - Muesli-type mix of various ingredients. Popular with owners and some rabbits; wide selection available; possibly better chewing exercise for the rabbit than pellets, but this is not an issue if you're also feeding hay as you should be. If the rabbit only eats its favourite bits then selective eating becomes a problem and dietary imbalances can occur. This will also be an issue if you have two rabbits living together and each eats different components. Examples - Russell Rabbit; Burgess Suparabbit.

Rabbit Pellets - Much more popular in the US than here. British rabbit owners complain that pellets look "boring" - which is a daft reason for rejecting a potentially good feeding option - after all, grass looks pretty boring to us but it's the best food for rabbits! Bunnies who are used to eating mix tend to turn their noses up at pellets, but they do eliminate the problems of selective feeding. Examples - Spillers range; Hagen.

How to Make a Solar Power Generator for Less Than $300

Using parts easily available from your local stores, you can make a small solar power generator for $250 to $300. Great for power failures and life outside the power grid. Power your computer, modem, vcr, tv, cameras, lights, or DC appliances anywhere you go. Use in cabins, boats, tents, archaeological digs, or while travelling throughout the third world. Have one in the office store room in case of power failures in your highrise. I keep mine in my bedroom where it powers my cd player, turntable, lights, modem, laptop, and (ahem) a back massager. I run a line out the window to an 8" x 24" panel on the roof.

1. Buy yourself a small solar panel. For about $100.

2. Buy yourself a battery. Get any size deep cycle 12 volt lead/acid battery. Look for bargains, it should cost about $50-60.

3. Get a battery box to put it in for $10. Buy a 12 volt DC meter. Radio Shack has them for about $25.

4. Buy a DC input.

5. But if you want to run AC appliances, you will have to invest in an inverter. This will convert the stored DC power in the battery into AC power for most of your household appliances. For $50.

6. Use a drill to attach the meter and DC input to the top of the box.

7. Use insulated wire to attach the meter to the wingnut terminals on the battery. Connect the negative (-) pole first. Only handle one wire at a time. Connect the DC inlet to the battery in the same way. Connect the solar panel to the battery in the same way.

8. Close the lid (I use a bungee cord to keep it tight). Put the solar panel in the sun. It takes 5-8 hours to charge a dead battery; 1-3 hours to top off a weak one. It will run radios, fans, and small wattage lights all night, or give you about 5 hours of continuous use at 115 volt AC, or about an hour boiling water...

• Maintain the right temperature in your refrigerator and freezer. Refrigerators can use up to 20 percent of the total electricity in your home. To keep your power bills low, don't use more energy than necessary. The refrigerator should be set between 38oF (3oC) and 42oF (6oC). The freezer should be set between 0oF (-31oC) and 5oF (-26oC).
• Keep them full. Surprisingly, it takes less energy to cool a full refrigerator or freezer than an empty one, provided it is not so jammed that air can't circulate. • Change in-line water filters annually to ensure an unrestricted flow of water to your washer. There is a filter at both the hot and cold water inlets, just inside the intake ports where the supply connectors attach.
