Using Adhesives to Repair Antique Furniture

Using an adhesive such as glue is the best and most desired joining device to use on your antique furniture. Older furniture was actually assembled with a totally accurate fit but sometimes humidity would factor into the joints being a little loose and then strain would occur.

Glue is used very little in assembling larger pieces of furniture when manufactured but is necessary when repairing the furniture later.

There are many glues on the market for the repair of furniture, some will adhere on contact without pressure while others will require about thirty minutes of pressure. It is best to buy only the best in glue, not the off-brands and to follow the directions fully on the product label.

Sometimes you will need to repair only the leg of a piece of furniture and fast-setting glues are not used for this type of repair. You will need to use the old-fashioned heavy glue. It will be necessary when the pieces are in position to use a clamp and reinforce the leg. You can also do this for splits in the wood and you will need to glue and replace each section then clamp. Be careful and don't buy any synthetic glues as they will be less durable on anything that takes a lot of wear.

A clean surface is necessary as glue will not hold on oily, painted or dirty surfaces. You cannot make a good joint without pressure from the clamps or even a tourniquet. You might even want to cement untempered hardboard or plywood to the jaws of metal clamps so that the clamps won't mark the wood. When you loosen the clamps be very careful to keep the joint from slipping because of the lubrication of the glue. They would apply perhaps a little more glue than is necessary and then squeeze the joint lightly thus distributing the glue. You can add more glue where it is needed and clamp hard to squeeze out the excess.

Remember that you will need the two surfaces to be glued close together as glue will not be used to fill gaps in loose joints. When you apply the glue and press the two surfaces together and clamp you will form the contact surfaces together with the glue. You can make your furniture look like new with this process.

You will need to have an accurate fit when attempting to use an adhesive to repair your antique furniture. The joint will be very weak and there will be a line showing where they are joined if the fit is not totally accurate. You don't want the surfaces to rock. They would suggest using carbon paper by laying it between the two surfaces and clamping them together for a minute or so, then releasing and you will be able to tell if you need to chisel either of the two pieces. Also remember that as the wood is harder you must be very careful to have the proper fitting between the two surfaces. Each time after you chisel, repeat the process of the carbon paper and the clamps until there is perhaps only a tiny little bump.

You will need to refit the parts after repair as they must be refitted perfectly to assemble. The wood may have shrunk or even warped in the adhesive process. You might have to steam the wood. Try to do any cutting on interior surfaces so that it might not be seen to the eye from the outside of the piece of antique furniture. You will be surprised how just a little paring, here and there will make the repaired furniture be back to as nearly perfect as possible.

The use of a tourniquet is very useful when gluing pieces that are joined. It is done by tying a rope round and round and across a piece, then inserting a stick in a loop and twisting until the rope is very tight.

When South Africans elected Nelson Mandela, the first Black African president of their country, members of the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) felt special satisfaction. With a membership representing all of South Africa's ethnic diversity, the UCCSA had long struggled for the end of apartheid. The UCCSA could now get on with the business of reconstructing and developing a new South Africa, including the education of its young women.

Inanda Seminary is an all-girls school of the UCCSA. Missionary Mary Kay Edwards was appointed by the American Congregational Church Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to open the first high school for African girls in South Africa in 1869.

The Inanda Seminary believes in offering a holistic education based on the Christian faith of the United Congregational Church. School begins each day with a chapel service that allows students and staff to concentrate on Christian principles and values.

In 1997 Inanda Seminary was on the verge of closure brought on by reduced government support, deteriorating infrastructure, a decrease in enrollment, and diminishing international support. Intervention by former pupils of the school, ‘the Old Girls,’ prevented the closure and the school was re-opened in January 1998 under a new Board of Governors. Sappi Limited has led corporate supporters in providing significant assistance. Assistance has also come from entities such as the French Embassy.

With the assistance of supporters, Inanda Seminary has completed a number of major restoration efforts in several classroom buildings, the museum and archive building, and the teachers’ cottage. Donors have contributed building restoration work and materials, at cost or for a reduced cost.

Inanda Seminary’s partnership with Global Ministries through the UCCSA and its missionaries continues to be an important part of the school’s support. Currently Global Ministries missionary Reverend Susan Valiquette serves at Inanda Seminary as a chaplain.

Other key projects still remain:

• The School's alumni have begun fundraising for the estimated R2.5-3 million needed for the restoration of the Edwards Hall, gutted by fire three years ago. The restoration of Edwards Hall is being done in honor of “Mah” Edwards, founder of the seminary.
• All of the furniture in Stanwood House has been restored to its original condition, including many photographs and paintings. During construction and restoration, many of the antiques found in various buildings and storage were assessed by a furniture restorer. It is the goal of the Inanda Seminary to restore the more valuable pieces of antique furniture.
• During the Inanda Seminary restoration the majority of the floorboard and windows and much of the roofing timbers were found to be in very poor condition. The timber and windows from the Umkomaas Drift School, which was being relocated, were salvaged for use at the Inanda Seminary.
• The Inanda Seminary Board of Governors established a Maintenance Trust Fund in order to accumulate capital over time to ensure that income from investments will be adequate to cover maintenance of the facilities. Donations to the Trust Fund for capital growth will be matched 1:1 by the Sappi Corporation, and 1:2 for donations to the Trust Fund for operating/administrative costs. How to Evaluate Antique Furniture

Collecting antique furniture is a costly endeavor. You don't want to make any mistakes and buy a misrepresented piece that you thought was worth hundreds of dollars or more.

Signs of Age

Steps:

1. Measure a piece of wood furniture. Wood shrinks as it ages by up to 1/8 inch per foot. If the furniture is old, its dimensions will not be uniform - it won't be the same width throughout, and a tabletop will not be completely round.

2. Run your hand over and shine a flashlight across the surface of the wood to detect hairline cracks and ripples that come with aging.

3. Look underneath for the inevitable warping and buckling of wood.

4. Look for wood that is discolored from uneven exposure to light and sun. An old piece of furniture that has stood against a wall for years will show its age with distinct differences in coloring.

5. Check the wood beneath the hardware. Here, the wood should show even greater contrasts in color.

6. Look at the screws. Screws made before 1840 had flat, un-tapered heads.

7. Search for the signs of normal wear and tear and the buildup of dust and grime in the furniture's corners and crevices.

8. Look at the frame under the upholstery for sets of nail holes from previous upholstery. An aged piece may have seen several changes in fabric.

9. Use a pocket level on a piece of glass or a mirror. Glass, too, warps with age.

Signs of Newness

Steps:

1. Look closely at the various pieces of wood used in the furniture - particularly the edges and feet. Differences between the pieces would indicate that parts have been replaced.

2. Beware of smooth edges from a power saw in contrast to the ragged edges made by a handsaw.

3. Distinguish between the older plank-style construction and the more modern tongue-and-groove construction.

4. Inspect for old or filled nail and screw holes that would have been made when the piece was originally built.

5. Open drawers and doors and look for screw holes that indicate that the original handles and hinges are gone.

6. Look at dovetail joints. New dovetails are either machine-made or much narrower than the wide, up-to-3/8-inch dovetails of the 1800s.

7. Compare all the dovetail joints in the piece. Perfect matching could mean the furniture is newer than advertised. Gross differences would demonstrate that pieces have been replaced.

8. Check out the surfaces. Uniformity in coloring, texture and smoothness points to newness or refinishing.

How to Buy Antique Furniture

1. Become familiar with terms like cabriole legs that you're going to come across in advertisements and auction catalogs. (By the way, cabriole legs curve out like a cowboy's after too long in the saddle.)

2. Study the names (there can be more than one) of the styles you like best. Sellers classify their furniture by style--Louis XV, Queen Anne, Chippendale and so on.

3. Check the antiques section of your local bookstore or library for reference guides. The Internet is another good source for information and photographs of different furniture styles.

4. Visit a local museum. Seeing antique furniture up close will help you identify it in the field. Ask the curator for the names of trustworthy local dealers.

5. Learn to spot features that could affect the value of a piece such as damaged finish or joints, or unauthentic hardware.

6. Get to know the local antique dealers and show them your wish list. They'll have contacts in other cities and states who can further your search. They will also be able to help you recognize a reproduction.

7. Go to an auction. For top-quality, top-dollar furniture, choose an auction house that guarantees what it sells. If you're not looking for a museum-quality piece, try a country auction, where you could find a bargain.

8. Watch for estate sales. If you're lucky, a family member will be at the sale to tell you about the piece's provenance or history.

9. Look through antiquing newspapers and magazines for ads, or search the Internet for antique fairs specializing in furniture.

10. Curb your desire for perfection in a piece of furniture that might be more than 100 years old. It should show signs of wear in places where you'd expect it, like the bottoms of chair legs and underneath drawer runners.

Overall Tips:

• Definitions vary, especially regarding more recent items, but generally speaking, an antique is at least 100 years old. Everything newer than that falls into the collectible category.
• Buy pieces you can use. Few of them have extra rooms they can fill with an untouchable collection of antique furniture.
• If you know how to date a piece of furniture, you won't fall for a reproduction. Read one of the many books on the subject.
