How Stable will the Post-SIM Radio-Optical Frame Tie Be?

hop fat machinery The best (most nearly inertial) global reference frame is currently the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) defined by VLBI observations of compact extragalactic radio sources. The positional accuracy of ICRF sources is typically about 0.3 milli-arcseconds. During the next decade the Space Interferometry Mission (SIM) will provide global positions of optical quasars with an expected precision of about 10 micro-arcseconds. There are a number of object in common between the ICRF and SIM source lists, allowing the radio and optical reference frame to be directly connected to high precision. Two important questions are the precision expected for this reference frame tie, and its stability over time.

This paper considers the effects of moving the ICRF to higher observing frequencies, the use of narrow-angle differential VLBI in addition to wide-angle VLBI position measurements, and the likely frequency of observations in both the radio and optical, to estimate the expected precision and stability of the radio-optical frame tie in the post-SIM era. Even with the improvements expected in astrometric VLBI measurements, the radio-optical frame tie for the SIM astrometric grid is likely to be limited by errors in the radio positions of ICRF sources.

Part of this research was carried out at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

FuKui optical production center celebrates the 100th anniversary

The great production center of optical frames is located mainly in Sabae and Fukui, Fukui prefecture, Japan. These cities dominate more than 90 percent of the entire domestic production share of optical frames. Highly value-added products made in this area have been exported all over the world and gained a solid reputation. It was in 1905 when the optical frame manufacturing started in Fukui. In those days, farmers had difficulties in making a living only by farming because of the heavy snow in winter.

Concerned about their situation, Mr. Gozaemon Masunaga invited some craftsmen from Osaka to provide farmers with a job that could be done indoors during the winter season. It is said that they had acquired the skill so earnestly that the craftsmen had nothing more to teach these trainees in half a year or so. Afterward, workers who developed their skills under Mr. Masunaga started to run their own business one after another building the foundation for the production center.

*1905 Gozaemon Masunaga invited some craftsmen from Osaka to Fukui-city and started the optical frame production.

*1906 Around this time, the optical frame production started in Sabae-city, too.

*1947 Showa Emperor visited optical frame manufacturers in Fukui.

*1948 The number of the optical frame factories remarkably increased around this time. Full scale sunglass production also started. 1949 Celluloid frame production entered full production (until around 1960).

*2001 Art school students worked on optical frame designs in a program of improvement of design ability (quality).

*2002 Fukui Business Support Center "FUKUI Minami Aoyama 291" opened in Minami Aoyama, Tokyo, where Fukui-made optical frames are displayed and sold in a wide range. Some of the companies in Fukui started to run their own shops under their direct management in Tokyo. Development of a new titanium frame made progress.

*2005 Commemorative events of the centennial anniversary of optical frame production center will be held.

Titanium Frames

WITH titanium being nickel-free, light and durable, titanium optical frames are very much in vogue, and this global trend has not escaped the eyes of Hong Kong manufacturers.

Moulin Optical Mfy Ltd makes stylish medium- to high-end titanium frames. Titanium is used for the main body of the frame, as well as components such as hinges, rim locks and pad arms, says marketing manager Gary Shiu. "Apart from the screws, which are made of stainless steel and the plastic parts, the rest of the frame is made of titanium," says Shiu. While some frames keep titanium's original gun metal colour, additional colouring is applied on others, resulting in a range of assorted hues, including dark brown, dark blue, gold and silver. Any colour coating, created by processes such as direct gold plating, is also nickel-free, Shiu notes.

Titanium and parts come mainly from Japan, and plastics are sourced from Italy, France and Japan.

Moulin's titanium frame production is a joint venture with Nikon, which provided the technology. Founded in 1960, Moulin launched its first batch of titanium frames at the end of 1996. It produces 20,000 titanium frames per month at a factory in Chaoyang in southern China. The production facility, staffed by 150 workers, has a floor area of roughly 15,000 square metres. Apart from making its in-house collection under the brand name Titane, the firm is also engaged in OEM for customers that include some renowned international labels.

Moulin requires a minimum order of about 1,000 units per model, for delivery 75-135 days after order confirmation. It sells its titanium frames mainly to the US, which accounts for 35-40% of titanium frame sales, followed by mainland China, with 25-30% of the total. Other titanium frame markets are in other parts of Asia and Europe...

Set up in 1995, Golden Star produces up to 50,000 optical frames a month. Minimum order is 300 units per model. Delivery takes about 60-90 days.Golden Star sells mainly to importers and wholesalers in Europe and the US. Its 450-worker factory in Shenzhen, on the mainland, has a floor area of about 60,000 square feet.

Titanium frames from Chuen Fung Spectacles Services Mfy come in silver, green, black and other colours. "Apart from the screws which are made of stainless steel, and nose pads and end-tips which are made of plastic, the rest of the frame is titanium," says manager Sun Shu Wa. Titanium and screws come from Japan, and plastics from France and Hong Kong. Exporting mainly to Southeast Asia, Europe and the US, the firm operates a 300-worker factory in Dongguan, on the mainland.

Established in 1994, Chuen Fung requires a minimum order of 300 pairs per model. Lead time is about 75 days.

Optical frame timing recovery in a time-multiplexed wavelength-division-multiplexing ring network

We demonstrate optical frame timing recovery in a three-node time-multiplexed wavelength-division-multiplexing (T-WDM) ring network. Bit-error-rate performance indicates no significant degradation is introduced by optically recovered frame timing or switching operation based on it.

The T-WDM ring network also demonstrates that utilizing network structures in conjunction with optical techniques can provide advanced network signaling and control functions such as addressing and grooming.
