I fished a small lake one dark night and pulled up into a small cove close to the edge of the water. It was really quiet. All of a sudden we heard a very large scream. It sent chills down my back. I searched the area with a search light and nothing. It was probably a screech owl or wildcat. We slowly backed out of the cove. I did not want something jumping into the boat that we couldn't handle.

I went fishing one time and didn't catch a thing all day. That was the scariest time I have ever had fishing. Just kidding. My scariest moment would have to be when I went fishing in a 12 foot john boat and I was tied up in the channel and a barge came by. By the time I seen him he was right on top of me, I thought he was going to sink the boat. I held on to the pilings I was tied on to the boat took a beating but I was good to go. Hey Rich fill me in on some details so if I venture out I won't get me self in trouble. Last night was a little scary there for a moment. I was wading a pond and foot got stuck in mud and feel over. Still caught the fish though. LOL

One morning I leaned over the side of the boat and saw my reflection, that was scary! LOL

Was out 12 miles and saw a front moving our way fast. Cleared lines and had the throttle forward when the wind did a funky change. Off to the port side a water unnel touched down a good way off. Then it disappeared, the wind changed and one touched to the strboard. This wen on about 5 or 6 times. Freaky feeling seeing water go UP!!! It's one of the visions that I'm glad I had my sight to see, but I don't know if I ever would want to do it again.Top of Page

I was fishing and standing in about 3 foot of water about 20 foot off the shore line. All of a sudden 3, yeah 3 water moccasin's swim right up to me. One swam on by, one paused and looked at me and went on and the 3rd just sat there flickin his tongue and lookin. I stood really still and about 30 seconds later I guess he thought I was cool so he moved on. My heart was beating about 500 BPM. But I went on fishin and caught a little bluegill......... that made it all worth it............ not.

hmmm. got quite a few. scaries weather, kayaking off the gulf coast fla in cove. when come out had 2-3 foot swells with a howling wind and tide pushing in the wrong direction. guide paddled us a mile or so and walked me in my boat tied to his for another mile or so and then when we came around the point to the flats i got out and we waded across the flats against the wind and tide for over an hour. total over 5 miles. whew. If i had not had him with me A. I would not have been in there. B. I would have had to be rescued by the coast guard. that i am certain of. so glad i was not alone. much more carefull now. scaries animal - gator bigger than yak chargin off the bank as i went by. Scaries person - fishing under an overpass by myself. two scary dudes show up outta no where with nothing but beers in their hands. one targets me with talk and the other looks all over for others. raised every hair on my body. my heart going 500 mph. my gut said git. when i came up outta there the truck they were in was hidden in the bushes way down in the ditch. bad news. animals can scare me but dudes like that really freak me out. this kinda thing happens to me more than you'd think and truthfully has slowed my fishing way way way down cuz I am always alone out there. Hey Bri, did I mention how nice it will be to have a buddy. LOL.Top of Page

I have some fishing buddies. I would like to find someone in the neighborhood that likes to fly fish as much as I do. I need to live closer to Rich. He's addicted to fly fishing as much as I am. LOL

brazin', I think that we'll be able to fill this thread with scary stories if we write them from the rest of the Key Largo populations's point of view after they see "Team Insanity Fishing"!!!Top of Page

Weather has provided most of the scares I have had out on the water. There have been a few critter scares, such as sharing the water with sharks that wanted a share of my catch. Moray eels that found their way off the line and into the boat when that was precisely the thing I wanted to avoid. And one memorable night of seeing lights under the water moving about, followed by odd shapes emerging from the bay water to walk on land. (Unexpected Night scuba divers are enough to either make you quit or start using buzzbaits Bob! LOL)Top of Page

We got stuck on our 33 foot carver in fog. It was our first fishing trip with the boat. We were only about 3 miles from the marina but could not move. We anchored and spent the night. I knew we were out of the channel and should be safe. Wouldn't you know it a small boat was heading for us. He finally saw us and turned and went on. A half our later here he came again. I guess he finally got in. We were covered in fog in less than 5 minutes.

Another time we were fishing in our 11 Trojan in the channel of the 1st Island just when it got dark. My son look out behind us and saw a large dark object. He said what is that. I checked radar and it was a big tanker coming in. Only one light was visible. I was trolling and was just about to cross the channel when it came in. I turned to the right and stayed out of his way.
Another time we were fishing a small lake at night when we were cruising in our small runabout. I saw a dark object infront of us and eventually realized it was a big house boat with no lights on moving across the lake.Top of Page

Fog can be a real problem. While working the Beach Patrol in Cape May Point NJ many years ago, we had a thick fog roll in. The tide was ebbing, so we waded in to make sure that no swimmers went in and kept in voice contact. The Captain and I heard a a boat motor approach, how he made it between the jetties is still a mystery to me, and we blew whistles to keep him from running aground. He dropped anchor in waist deep water and asked how he could get to Lewes DE. Only my fellow guards saw the humour in my response "take the ferry". (Lewes is across the DE Bay, and about an hour via ferry. Guess I've always been a wiseguy...)Top of Page

You just go ahead and do that Dan. You would never have to worry about me saying no to fishing. I have never found anyone who loves to fish as much as I do and doing it with a fly rod is icing on the cake.

My scariest time fishing was at a secluded pond. Got my sons all situated, just sat down got my pole in the water, sitting right on the waters edge. My one son said Ma-what is that? I could see like head and eyes coming at us. Just like that shark attack movie. So I thought better bring my pole in. Next thing you know, a huge pike charged up to the waters edge, spun and flicked his tail hit my chair so hard ended up knocked me off my chair and slappin me in the leg with his tail. Come to find out he was chasing my minnows, but wow did that ever scare me.Top of Page

How long did it take for you heart to slow down. I guess he wanted that minnow more than his fear of people.
