What is search engine relevancy and why do I care?

Modified on 2004-11-12

Search engine relevancy is how closely a web site page matches the search term typed into a search engine. For example, if someone types in “phoenix real estate,” a page on Phoenix real estate should have a high relevancy and appear near the top of the search results. A page that deals with general real estate would have lower relevancy and appear later in the search listing. A site on 'Star Wars' would have no relevancy and would not appear.

The more a search engine sees your page as relevant to the search term, the more likely your page will appear on the first search results page. The more often you appear on the first page the more visitors your site is likely to receive.
