Safe Routes to School Resources
One of the most important things we can teach our children is how to bike and walk safely to school.
Resources for School Districts, Schools, Cities and Counties
- WSDOT Safe Routes to School Grant Program -- The purpose of the Safe Routes to School Grant Program is to increase the number of children walking and biking to school safely. Proposals are due on October 2, 2006.
- WSDOT Safe Routes to School Planning and Partnership Class -- This class provides information about the Safe Routes to School Program with an emphasis on partnerships and planning. Additional classes are being scheduled around the state. If you are interested in having a class in your area, contact Charlotte Claybrooke at (360) 705-7302 or email claybrc@wsdot.wa.gov.
- National Safe Routes to School Clearinghouse -- Information about starting a Safe Routes to School Program, frequently asked questions and the SR2S National Course.
- National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) -- Safe Routes to School: How to Get Started Tool Kit
- National Center for Disease Control and Prevention -- A quick start kit, presentations and other Kids Walk To School resources
- Bicycle Alliance of Washington -- Classes and other resources to support schools and school districts interested in Safe Routes to School
- Federal Highway Administration -- This website provides an overview of the Federal Safe Routes to School Program, as well as specific Program Guidance to the States in the administration of SRTS funds.
- School Administrator's Guide to School Walk Routes and Student Pedestrian Safety -- Washington Requires School Walk Routes: All Washington State school districts are required to have suggested route plans for every elementary school (WAC 392-151-025). In addition, Safe Routes to School Projects are required to have School Walk Routes. This guidebook created by Washington's Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington Traffic Safety Commission and WSDOT provides direction on how to develop and implement school walk routes, procedures to identify pedestrian safety deficiencies along walk routes, and ways for school administriators to work with local public works agencies.

- PedSafe -- The Pedestrian Safety Guide and Countermeasure Selection System provides the latest information available for improving the safety and mobility of those who walk. This online tools includes information about possible engineering, education, or enforcement treatments to improve pedestrian safety and/or mobility based on user input about a specific location.
- Pedestrian Facility Design Training -- This course which is being held in Spokane on May 10, 2006 and in Burien on May 12, 2006 will provide information about the design of pedestrian facilities.

- International Walk to School Day -- International Walk to School Day, the first Wednesday in October, gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of walking.
- Walking School Bus -- A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. This website provides information about how to start a walking school bus at your school.
