Fishing’s ‘awesome’ at the sanctuary
Cancel those plans to go garage sailing with your spouse. Call in sick to work. Do whatever it takes, just get out and fish the Russian River this weekend, because all reports indicate it’s as good as it gets.
Several factors figure into dipnetting success
As millions of sockeye salmon prepare to storm the rivers in an attempt to make the long journey up to their spawning grounds, a seemingly equal number of people are preparing for their own pilgrimage to catch them — all part of the uniquely Alaska activity known as dipnetting.
Local loon chicks can suffer from bad boating, fishing behavior
Last Sunday on Father’s Day, I was lucky enough to get out on Sport Lake to do some leisurely fishing. While most of the others in the boat were on a mission to hook into a kokanee (a landlocked sockeye salmon) or a rainbow trout, my attention wandered off toward watching the violet green swallows that were flying low along the water’s edge, picking off the mosquitoes and stone flies in their flight path.     Thrill of the hunt is good clean fun for clammers
    In the six-plus months I have lived in Alaska, no other prey has made my heart pound and left me pan-ting for breath like the clam. When I tell friends in Wisconsin about chasing the swift invertebrate I sometimes receive a confused response.
    Kasilof hot for kings, Kenai warming up
    Kasilof is the word on the water this weekend as the king fishing continues to remain hot there, and the sockeye bite isn’t bad either.
