Part of the charm of Costa Rica is its "manana" attitude. In the Spanish language, manana means "tomorrow". In Costa Rica, it means "not today". For months now, our phone line has been coming to our new facilities "manana". In the meantime I.C.E., the Costa Rica utility company, has been working hard to improve our cell service. Now that they have improved it, our phone often does not ring. You leave a message with us, and we may not receive it. Often after speaking for 5 minutes, one side or the other becomes muted. Our calls often terminate with: "Hello...hello...can you hear me?" or "He hung up on me!" Your calls are always welcome, but please depend more upon email. Our connection speed is now a blazing 16 BPS, so if your email is set up to include our message in your reply, we ask you to please delete out the photos we send, so we do not have to receive them again. Thanks for bearing with us. Those of you who know San Jose also know that the inconveniences here in 1 Dream Getaway Territory are far-outweighed by the benefits. Hasta manana....

WIN A 1 DREAM GETAWAY VACATION

FIRST ABOUT COSTA RICA: If you have read our web site, you know there are two Costa Ricas. San Jose (the Central Valley) , where 3/4 of Costa Rica's population is packed like sardines, is the only place any government services are provided because the government provides for itself. Government is diligent about collecting money from the rest of the country, but adamant against spending it.

The reason the most beautiful, passionate, unselfishly giving women in the world (Ticas) are always looking outside Costa Rica for mates is that Ticos are self-absorbed, hate to work---and they hate for anyone else to work. For that reason, Costa Rica is a strictly monopolistic country. For that reason, Costa Rica refuses to sign NAFTA. For that reason, Costa Rica will always be a third world country.

There is one utility company (I.C.E.) and one Internet Service Provider (Racsa). Go to AOL's international service page and you will find phone numbers all over the world where you can connect using your AOL account when you travel. But when you get to Costa Rica, it says "No number. No number planned." This is because Ticos cannot compete, so they pass laws prohibiting competition.

NOW FOR OUR PROBLEM AND YOUR CHANCE AT A FREE VACATION: We are building a new 1 Dream Getaway office. There have not been any phone lines available here in six years, although thousands have applied for them. Phone lines have always been a problem everywhere in Costa Rica, and---even in San Jose---have for years been obtained either by buying them from someone or openly bribing someone from I.C.E.. A few years ago it became illegal to sell a phone line, but is still commonly done. You agree to buy a line and the owner goes to I.C.E. saying he is moving and asking that the line be moved.

We found a lady in our area willing to sell her phone line. She spent 4 hours on a bus to ask I.C.E. to move the line (to our new office), and I.C.E. refused. The problem is that all the relay boxes have been full for years, yet I.C.E. has no future plans to run new lines or install larger boxes. In typical Tico thinking: "Gee, to run lines and install boxes will cost money and we have to work. But we can make more money selling cellular phones and won't have to work at all."

Cell service is ridiculously expensive in Costa Rica (because there is no competition) and not only does the cell owner pay---but anyone who calls him pays double. In addition, reception sucks (accept, of course, in San Jose). There is a spot across the street from our new office, on top of a hill, where our cell phone works. We are often joined there by neighbors trying to make calls. We believe we could get reasonable reception with a high external antenna.

Our new office has a clear view of the southern sky. Direct TV is readily available, and, in the rest of the world, offers internet service. However Costa Rica's ISP (Racsa) prohibits DTV from switching on the internet service. Racsa's service also sucks and is ridiculously expensive (again---no competition). Obviously, we HAVE to have the Net. So here's your chance at a free 1 Dream getaway vacation.

Bring whatever it takes to get us reasonably well connected at a reasonable cost, and your vacation is free. This offer does not include airfare.
