"We
woke up in the middle of the night and realized that everything we had
was going up in smoke," remembers
E. Kourtesis, a Maryland resident.
Help was soon on the way. The Red Cross rushed to the scene
and found the family a place to stay, helped to replace lost eyeglasses
and medications, provided necessities like soap and toothpaste, and
distributed vouchers for food and clothing. "In the midst of the chaos,
there was a smiling, concerned face," recalls Elizabeth, "an arm I could
lean on and a sense of hope."
Every day, fires and other disasters devastate families.
Last year, the Red Cross provided 3,549 children and
adults of Central Maryland with shelter, food, clothing, and other items
needed to get back on their feet.
It costs the Red Cross an average of $2,500 a day, 365 days
a year to provide disaster relief in our community. Without your support,
this vital response to neighbors in need would not be possible.

The
American Red Cross of Central Maryland gratefully acknowledges the following
companies and organizations for supporting direct relief for victims
of fires, floods and other disasters in Central Maryland. Red Cross
Disaster Action Teams include trained caseworkers, food and shelter
volunteers, medical personnel and counselors who provide comfort and
support on the scene, making sure everyone has food, clothing and a
safe place to stay The Central Maryland Chapter distributes nearly $2,500
per day to residents of our community who have been displaced by disasters.
