The Price of Justice for Pit Bulls is more expensive than predicted -- Humane Society needs to raise $167,450 by years' end

MADISON – The Dane County Humane Society released information today pertaining to the financial impact the recent pit bull seizure is having on their resources.

Costs in the first two weeks of containment have reached over $20,000 and are projected to reach $167,450 in the first year. “Raising that much money on top of our existing fundraising responsibilities puts a heavy burden on Humane Society staff,” states Sean McBryde, Humane Society spokesperson. “We are glad to assist in the prosecution of this case and hope that it results in tougher legislation against animal fighting and abuse. However, we need to ensure that we can continue to fund quality care for the stray and surrendered animals in Dane County.”

The Dane County Humane Society is a non-profit organization that does not receive any state or federal funding. Dane County contracts with the Humane Society on a yearly basis to take responsibility for all stray, injured or abused animals and wildlife in the county, as well as additional services related to protecting the public from dangerous animals and wildlife. This contract constitutes 25% of the shelter’s total operating budget and does not include monies for the care of seized animals.

The pit bull seizure, (which falls under the purview of the contract), causes a unique concern because the dogs are “wards of the state” and are considered in protective custody for an undetermined period of time.

“We are forced to prepare for the fact that realistically, this could take a considerable amount of time,” said McBryde. “As a result of the special treatment required to maintain a safe environment caring for these animals, our daily care costs are 50% higher than for care of regular stray and surrendered animals.”

The seized animals cost $17.13 per dog per day (for care and feeding based on the increased treatment required). It is unknown whether these expenses will be recovered. Dane County Humane Society is therefore funding a minimum of $788 per day of unbudgeted expense.

Pit Bull Update

The 52 animals that were seized last Wednesday, June 14th , have all been individually medically evaluated, are being well-fed and are settled in kennels. It is still too early to tell what will happen with the Pit Bulls due to the court case and legal battle. We will keep you updated with more information when we are made aware of it.

THANK YOU so much for your support! We greatly appreciate everything that has been done so far.

We still need help though! There is the link on this page (Adopt a Dog for a Day) to donate money or you can check our "Help Out" link on the left hand side column and then the "Wish List" to see what other items we still need donated.
