Giant Loop of Sound Ku Ba, Carlisle
CARLISLE’S best band, The Giant Loop of Sound, returned to active duty in city’s live music scene last night after a break of many months.
They were as happy to be back as Carlisle’s gig-going public was to have them. What’s more they’ve returned energised, even better than before and with a fuller, more-rounded sound.
The band – Stephen Dunn, lead vocals and guitar, Neil Fraser, drums and backing vocals, Andy Harper, bass and backing vocals and Chris Harty, keyboards and backing vocals – describe their music as “clap and spin”, which gives a hint of the happy, up-beat music they make.
I defy anyone of any musical persuasion not to love this band and leave, at least, smiling – or with aching feet.
The Giant Loop kicked off Ku Ba’s new live music venture (in their funky attic space) with a whistle-stop tour of favourite songs, from Elvis Costello’s Pump It Up (making full use of the brass section), plenty of Madness and Specials, to REM’s End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) – which worked surprisingly well – and (a Giant Loop standard) The Teardrop Explode’s Reward.
Whereas before the brass section of the band, the Randall & Hopkirk Orchestra (Alan ‘Shut It’ Branstone on trumpet and Chris ‘The Dead One’ Riley on trombone) were very much an after thought, never really seeming a full part of the band, they are now incorporated into every song. These different arrangements put an extra stamp of ownership on their songs, especially the covers, and it’s altogether a richer sound. and an even better experience.
While the Giant Loop were away they were never forgotten, but it is so good to have them back.

Mendeed - Malefice, Scurge Camden Underworld, London, 05
August 2005
You would think that the one way not to shake the Raging
Speedhorn comparisons that have plagued Scurge over the
years would be to recruit their guitarist. However, on the basis of
tonight’s performance which includes five new songs since their
last release, it is apparent what the additional axeman Jay
Thompson brings to the band. And it isn’t the extra power
brought by doubling up the guitar riffs as previously employed
by Scurge and Thompson’s main bread winner but the dual
attack produces some interesting guitar harmonies without
losing their inherent brutal impact. When Scurge get it right, they
get it right and tonight they make it clear that they ready to step
up to the next level.
Reading’s Malefice offer us some fairly generic metalcore to
which the crowd (many of whom seem to have made the trip
along the M4 ) show their appreciation through circle pits and a -
albeit tame - wall-of-death only adding to the anticipation of the
nights main attraction.
It’s been an eventful year for Mendeed off-stage but one things
for sure; they rarely disappoint on it. Tonight the Glasgow
quintet are also showcasing new songs - three so new they
remained unnamed - as well as their new single ‘Beneath a
Burning Sky’ the release of which this show coincides. Mendeed
display the extreme metallic hardcore that we have come to
expect from them, only with more exuberance (and eyeliner)
than in previous outings. At points it seems as if there are five
frontmen; singer Dave Proctor stepping back to allow to the
guitarists to take centre stage.
The most irritating thing about this band is that they make it
look so damn easy. Guitarist Steven Nixon smiles for ear to ear
as he effortlessly reels off another speed solo like he’d just
remembered a joke he’d been told in the tour van; Kevin
Matthews looks oblivious to the fact that he is mid-blast beat.
On this form there is no reason why that the Mendeed roller
coaster should be stopping any time soon. “A proud night for
British Heavy f**kin’ Metal” exclaims Proctor to the Camden
faithful after a super-charged rendition of ‘Ignite the Flames’. A
proud night indeed.

....look, another review of our gig on the 16th Sept.
A GIANT LOOP OF 'CLAP AND SPIN'
(Published in the 'News & Star' 22/09/2005)
Giant Loop of Sound, The Brickyard, Carlisle, Friday September 16
DESPITE the fact that this reviewer laid her cards on the line and called Giant Loop of Sound 'Carlisle's best band' only last month even such a great recommendationisn't enough to convince Carlisle's gig-going public.
Never mind, last Friday night that just meant there was a room to dance for the couple of hundred who did turn up.
Whereas the Giant Loop's last gig was almost entirely cobers (of songs that have influenced the band's style) Friday's gig showcased their original material - with some surprise covers, such as Steve Harley's Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me).
Once again the band proved why they really are Carlisle's 'clap and spin' masters, not only for the pop gems they play (with a bit of ska and calypso thrown in) but for the sheer enthusiasm of their delivery - and not just Carlisle's very own 'most enthusiastic man', lead singer Stephen Dunn. There's no doubt that they're having a good time playing Giant Loop favourites, such as Something's Bothering Me, and the audience picks up the happy vibe. They're the opposite of floor gazers.
Support band My Scarlet Darling, got to share in this bon homie at Friday's gig. Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, everyone was kind enough not to mention the Ashes and gave their Jam-influenced, intense, powerful songs - taken from their CD Tiny Knives - a warm reception. The band will be back at The Brickyard in October.

Accidental Angels -pop/punk rockers interview:
A brief description of their band/band members:
James - Singer/guitarist/songwriter - doesn't smoke, doesn't drink (often), gives up his seat on the tube for old ladies, never swears in front of his mother and has a freakishly large collection of belts. Likes his Rock hard and his Roll buttered.
Chris - Guitars - smokes, drinks and never eats. Has a somewhat unhealthy penchant for power pop bands such as Big Star, Jellyfish and Mercury Rev -none of which are apparent in his ham fisted guitar playing.
Ronnie - Bass - smokes, drinks, eats and grins. Ronnie has a pearly white smile that frightens children and the elderly - resultantly, to prevent audiences being blinded by the reflection of stage lights from his gob, we duct tape over his mouth at gigs.
Marco - Drums - smokes, drinks and sleeps - our little Italian dynamo - what he lacks in height, he more than makes up for in general enthusiasm (until the narcolepsy kicks in, and he nods off onto his snare mid-gig).
How long have you been together? A little over a year, well, some of us have - we picked up Ronnie and Marco (bass and drums) more recently after losing their predecessors in a freak yachting incident.
How did you meet? Time honoured tradition, really. Two drunk blokes talking bollocks about music hit it off, rope in another couple of mates, mates fall by the wayside, leaving two drunk blokes talking bollocks about music in a bar, rope in another couple of likely lads and Bingo! we're back in business.
What are you musical influences? Classic rockpunkpop - everything from Thin Lizzy to the Wildhearts, via Cheap Trick, Blink 182 and James Last
How did you come up with your band’s name? Comes from a line in "Perfect Timing", a David Lee Roth tune. We subsequently found out that our American cousins use the phrase as a description of babies who die young. Oops.
How would you describe your music to people? We're a little ray of sunshine - catchy choruses, big arrangements, and loud guitars - all sprinkled with magic dust from crushed up pixies.
Any plans on recording some more songs? Absolutely - we're doing well with the current CD but have a big pot of songs that we'd like to make available... if nothing else, we recorded the last batch at Giant Wafer studios in Wales and had a great time - working on recording during the days and spending the evenings drinking with the locals - we need a good excuse to go back for another week...
Do you have any gigs/tours lined up this year? We've loads of gigs coming up - including the Carling Academy, The Garage, The Barfly and a heap of London's other seedier venues - we're in the process of arranging a handful of shows in Italy and are looking at playing a series of dates outside London in the New Year - check www.accidentalangels.net to be kept in the picture.
Which is the best venue you have played at? Hard to say - the Underworld in Camden is great - has a good rock'n'roll vibe about the place, Storm in Leicester Square quite suits us, but overall, it would have to be the Garage in Islington - great sound, good lighting, decent stage, switched on staff and always has a fabulous atmosphere.
What do you guys get up to on a normal day?
"...woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head...."
As little as we can get away with really - we all live together in a Young Ones/Monkees style, so most of our days are spent arguing over who gets to be Mickey Dolenz and who gets stuck with being Neil again. Then having rows about who's turn it is to take the rubbish out. You should see us all on laundry day... it's not pretty.
James is a tree surgeon Chris works for a charity that re-houses homeless otters Ronnie... well, no-one quite knows what Ronnie does... Marco swans around London, looking Italian, sipping espressos and pinching lovely ladies' backsides.
What are the band’s plans for the future? To keep building the following that seems to grow with every gig To record and release another CD To kidnap Paris Hilton, chop her up into small pieces and bury her in a forest To secure a record deal with a label that can keep us in washing powder and mung beans To be able to move into a larger house - Ronnie and Marco are sick of James and Chris arguing over who gets the top bunk at Angels Towers.

A gentle reminder, dear reader...
Accidental Angels, Friday 28th October 2005, Storm Leicester Square, London...Tonight.....
As Halloween draws near, being the cuddly little demons that we are, Accidental Angels will be donning our comedy vampire teeth and seasonal novelty masks (an improvement, you say, dear reader? Oh, you are a wag...), dusting off our copies of "the monster mash" and heading to the crypts of London's Leicester Square to sacrifice a goat or two.
Friday, 28th sees us back in the hellfire club-esque surroundings of Storm, Leicester Square -it's a venue that rather suits us, it has a little dirt under its fingernails and if it were to be a character from a horror movie, it would no doubt be Bernard Bresslaw's Sockett from "Carry on screaming"...
We're on at 8.30, but don't let that stop you from getting there a little earlier - there are a handful of spiffing bands on both before and after us... we're the filling in what could be the best rock'n'roll sandwich you'll eat this week.

Hope to see you there Accidental Angels - because we've got the best collection of shrunken heads you're ever likely to see...

Accidental Angels
Organic, high-energy commercial rock! Big build ups, anthemic choruses and electrifying stag antics makes Accidental Angels a band you can't ignore.
Accidental Angels consist of JD - Lead vocals, Guitar, song-writer, Chris - Guitars, Ronnie - Bass Guitar and Marco - Drums.
UK Rock Band Accidental Angels offer up an informative and well presented website with a good amount of information on each member, upcoming gigs and of course their latest release. Accidental Angels are also off to a heavenly flying start with regard to their upcoming music career and boast having played in front of audiences of over 800 at venues such as The Garage, Islington, Sound, Leicester Sq, The Barfly, Camden, Underworld, Camden, Carling Bar Academy, Islington among many others. Wow, busy fellas! Get the Review.......................

Tracks: This Song, Crazy Life, Lullaby.
INL Comments: . Today Indie News Live pump AA on their powerful monitors awakening the slumberful and depressed Monday Morning commuters in the street! Arousing curiosity we are proudly presenting a band that shows some excellent potential and charm, kicking supreme life and soul through airwaves across southern Spain!
Having a listened to the few snippets of tracks on AA's website, I immediately caught a blast of their full blown energy pumped into the very core of this band. Quite audibly masterful in their playing skills you'll quickly notice how catchy their tracks become and how well the songs have been recorded. With an upbeat college campus rhythm reminiscent of Busted (plus I note some ever so slight innovative vocal melodies of the infamous beach boys) all blend together to produce a modern catalytic sound of pure and clean industrious Rock And Roll.
Whilst being quite fond of good Rock I am particularly taken to this band's style of delivery. AA sound focused through their songs and undoubtedly are unique in their delivery and production. Head rocking, definately. Guitar smashing - not quite. Therefore I believe AA are a fantastic blend of soft and hard. 'Lullaby' delivers a beautiful melody accompanied by earnest and strong vocals. 'Crazy Life' is perfect soundtrack material. 'This Song' is raunchy, rhythmic rocky and tight!
Overall Rating: AA will grow on you quickly. It won't be an accident when these angels are flying ahead of many other mediocre bands. Top quality stuff here!

XSIF Records:
Ready for take off!
A brand new label establishes itself with a smashing first release. From now on techtrance, hardtrance, hardhouse and harddance will never be the same: XSIF is here!
Fausto Talone, better known as DJ Fausto, and Junior Rodgers already joined their forces in the past to create some monstertunes, but now they have also decided to use their strengths to realise the dream they share: their very own recordlabel! That dream was the founding of XSIF Records. The first release on XSIF will be “Junior Rodgers – Beatz and Breakz”, it’s the final result of months of preparation and hard work.
“Beatz and Breakz” is an example of what kind of music XSIF wants to be related to. The A-side, called Part 1, is a heavy techtrancy track born from the musical brain of Junior Rodgers himself. A filthy funky groove collides with some class a percussion and a bassline that sounds so warm, you could easily burn your hands whilst holding the record! The melody sounds like a tropical cocktail of acidsounds and hammering synths, with a catchy flow created by the minimal vocal. The beatz, the breakz, it’s got it all!
The flipside is referred to as Part 2 and was produced by the one and only Dutch hardtrancemachine: Tommy Pulse!
After doing some serious harddancedamage to the dancefloors throughout the whole world, the Pulseman is back in full effect. Delivering a state of the art hardtrance remix of “Beatz and Breakz”, he prooves his name once again and establishes his own renowned and exclusive sound with this cracker! Pounding beats and basslines abuse the speakers to the max and the original melody was used to keep the original flow of the original mix. Smashing synths complete the picture, so also all you harddance- and hardtrancelovers are also being served by XSIF Records from now on!
This first release will be available in stores from October 3rd. If you prefer downloading it on the internet surf to www.dance-tunes.com to legally download the tracks in MP3 format.
Also be sure to visit our website: www.xsifrecords.nl and please leave a message with your opinion on “Beatz and Breakz”.

As reviewed by RockSomething.com
"Glancing across the promotional pictures for Leicester-based melodic
rockers Platinum Jar, you’d never believe that the band had been
together for about twelve years now. But if you take into account that
the band cite influences as bold and important as Deep Purple,
Whitesnake and Bon Jovi and that one of the members sports a rather
fetching neckerchief, it makes total sense. This is because Platinum
Jar aren’t just another young bunch of young squirts desperate to skank
about on a stage with only a few power chords and grunts to accompany
them; this is a band that have clearly spent a long time working out
exactly what they want to do - and apparently it’s rock… not just mimic
everybody else around them.
Having said this, the sound of Platinum Jar is far from un-worldly.
Instead Jay Lang’s vocals recall Jon Bon Jovi, whilst the band flickers
between classic Bon Jovi and prime Deep Purple – certainly “Rock Chick”
would slot nicely into Purple’s “Machine Head”. Stand out track is
undoubtedly “ Slow Road” which has a similar gargantuan production job
as GNR’s “November Rain” in only about one-third of the duration.
Granted, the almost endless list of endearing classic rock
influences might sound a bit old hat, but in practice, what Platinum
Jar have achieved here is in creating an almost instant air of
familiarity without becoming a tribute act. It’s a trick that few bands
pull off successfully, due to the talent required in writing, playing
and finally singing the stuff, but it’s a credit to their abilities
that Platinum Jar are able to play these tracks and not sound
ridiculous.
Basically, if you’re a classic rock
fan, now’s the time to check this lot out – because sooner or later
they’re gonna be a lot bigger and a lot more reluctant to give their
music away for free on their website. Top stuff."

Many thanks to Rock Something!

It is late hours on a Thursday night before a long weekend. The Zanzibar is affluent with life, yet the audience is subdued because they have just had to sit through possibly the worst live act in Liverpool's long musical heritage. Five lads with one Oasis songbook and no ideas whatsoever. People laughed at them. The audience is testy. The next band on is a three piece called The Howls. Straight away they gain points over the last act because they actually look the part, you can tell they've put a bit more thought and effort into this thing than just penning a few tunes. There is a subdued 'Hello, We're the Howls', then... BANG. Unbelievable. Live music in Liverpool just stepped up several gears. It sounds like there are actualy five of them, all launching as one into a set that no-one who was there is ever going to forget. This is heavy, punk edged rock at it's very best. Imagine Communication Breakdown by Zeppelin blitzed on amphetamine and high strength painkillers. It's a dirty, gritty, sleazy, razor sharp sound; catchy bass hooks, clentched-teeth riffs and the nutter on drums leading the whole thing on. There are signed bands who would bend over and give their backside for this kind of sound. You can tell you're in the presence of something big when you notice the package. The other bands who played that night were just local boys doing a gig. These guys are out to get noticed. They're a tight band, they weave in and out of each other's rhythm and lead lines more often than should be possible in three-minute gems like these. They groove on stage, they wave their heads, they move their feet and the audience cannot help but get swept up in the whole thing and move along with them. You have six songs going off around your head like explosions. Each one feels like you've just taken a punch in the gut. There's melody, there's agony, there's grit, there's torment, there's tunes you'll whistle for days. This is back street Rock'n'Roll laced with energy and ingenuity that you don't usually get for three quid on a Thursday night. Where do you put your eyes and your ears to stuff like this? You don't want to miss anything because you know that you are witnessing the start of something paramount. After the set there are people stood in front of the stage wearing gormless smiles of disbelief at what they have just seen. Each and every one of us would have paid top greenback to see it again. There is no way that Liverpool is big enough to hold onto The Howls. At some point in the near future they are going to detonate and the impact will be heard way, way into the horizon. I'm just made up that I'll be able to say I was there when they lit the fuse.

On June 18th, something spectacular is going to happen. Take 11 bands, mix in a dollop of rock, a few hundred people and the fact that there will be a lot of cash raised for charity, what do you have? Mosh4Dosh. M.I.G Promotions will be presenting an 11 hour music fest, introducing some of the best unsigned bands in the country. Expect to hear some great sounds, and be part of an awe inspiring day, along with the knowledge that all proceeds from tickets sales will go to Cancer Research UK, and all set in the notorious Brixton Telegraph, this is a mixture for a belter of a day.
The bands participating are some of the best fresh talent around on the rock scene. The headline band ‘Imicus’ are possibly the next big thing to hit the airwaves, with gigs planned over the next few weeks with Ruben and Blindside, it might be worth catching them before they hit the big time. (www.myspace.com/imicusband)
Other acts include, Adorno Stone, Chia Chia, Monsters In The Attic, The Otters, None The Less, The Hoggs, Infocus and The Logans. All bands have built up an impressive fan base and will exercise the music muscle of any rock/indie inclined listener.
With one act after the other, an eclectic fusion of fantastic riffs, catchy lyrics and entrancing performances are guaranteed. And all in aid of Cancer Research UK.
For the price of less than a quid a gig, you can’t really go wrong.
This day will be one not to miss, this day will be an inspiration, this day will humble the unhumblable, Mosh4Dosh, a day to remember.

LOCI with
support from BLUEROOM - 28th June
FREE ENTRY.
At: JOE PUBLICS
3 Queens Avenue(under
habitat)
Clifton
Bristol
Loci
Loci's sound has its roots in the alt-rock
revolution of the 90's. This is music born of frustration: aggressive and
inventive, vast and explosive.
Described as “Muse meets Pink Floyd” (Jonny B,
Swansea 96.4 the
Wave), “high energy… full, loud and thrusting” (Bristol
Evening Post) and with ''a bigger sound than your average Polyphonic Spree
sized outfit'' (Decode Magazine) Loci produces a sound that belies their
three-piece status. An immense and unapologetic loudness encapsulated by
unstoppable drums, driven by seductive and sultry bass, and charged with insane
and vicious guitars.
This is music to care about again…
Blueroom
3 piece indie rock band with some great hooks and
bouncing tunes.
If you're in the Bristol area come on down to what promises to
be a fantastic night of FREE(.) live music.

Supercharged Tour Ends with a Bang. After 10 gigs and clocking up at least 750 miles on the UK roads, the tour came to an end after terrific sets at the Glastonbudget Festival, Firebug and The Shed. There is a tour diary on our official homepage at www.theauthentics.co.uk (diary section) and the band would like to thank everyone who made it possible and came down to enjoy a rockin’ start to the summer.
BBC Interview The Authentics have conducted an interview with the BBC which can be read here http://www.bbc.co.uk/leicester/content/articles/2006/05/24/u nsigned_bands_authentics_feature.shtml and they are looking for questions from fans for their own website interview so please mail your Q’s to this address or add to the message board section of the website.
More music available at IndieStore Indiestore is a brand-new service from 7 Digital that allows independent artists to sell their music online and The Authentics have made 3 tracks available to purchase through their online store and will be adding the Supercharged tracks to them within the next month - http://www.indiestore.com/theauthentics
Review“Its clear to see that The Authentics appear cursed with the fact that they couldn’t write a song without hammering onto it a riotously infectious melodic groove even if their lives depended on it and a pistol was put to their temple. Crookedly groovy, this jars and jabs in all the right places packed throughout with needling riffs and hooks galore to kill for.” Losing Today Magazine, June 2006. Full review here http://www.losingtoday.com/tales.php

Greener than ever.
Our private 225-acre venue under the sun and stars of Nova Scotia is the perfect place for our community to come together and celebrate each year. Evolve has consistently pursued an aggressive green strategy with each festival, always trying to reduce our event's footprint on the land. This year, we push it even further.
All our marketing materials are printed with low-waste waterless inks on 100percent post consumer tree free paper. The festival employs alternative energies such as Bio-Diesel, Wind and Solar to power the site. This year, our vendors will provide only compostable eat-ware to cut down on garbage. This means that all the paper plates and such will be 100percent organic matter and will be able to go back to earth without ever going to a dump. Even Evolve's port-o-potties will be stocked with tree-free toilet paper. And as always, our Sunflower Recycling Stations will make garbage separation and recycling easy.
Only 38 days until EVOLVE. Here's what we're working on…
* We're putting the finishing touches on this year's Awareness Village <http://www.evolvefestival.com/awareness.asp>. The new Village will feature street names, a Town Crier, travelling minstrels, plus more yurts and teepees. We're setting up way more food vending booths, and there will be some amazing new vendors with clothing, musical instruments and other funked-out items. The Village will also feature dozens of workshops to expand your mind, including the very popular morning yoga. We've got special guest speakers including Elizabeth May <http://www.elizabethmay.ca/>– former director of the Sierra Club Canada and current candidate for the leadership of the Green Party of Canada <http://www.greenparty.ca/>.
*We're working all aspects of the venue, including stage setups, more signage and the expansion of our quiet camping areas <http://www.evolvefestival.com/camping.asp> for those who like a bit of peace and quiet at night.
It's happening all over again. EVOLVE returns for its biggest and best festival yet. We'll bring the music - you bring the love. Get ready to EVOLVE, people.
