Online Australian image collections

The PictureAustralia service has been provided for use by all Australians, to discover our heritage as documented in pictures. Through a single access point, it is possible to search the distributed image collections of many significant cultural institutions (libraries, museums, galleries and archives), without having to know where the images are held.

A number of Australian libraries provide online access to their image collections as well as interpret their collections within online exhibitions - providing direct access to the wealth of information contained within pictorial items.

To find online image collections in Australian libraries, go to the 'Advanced search' option here in the Australian Libraries Gateway, and limit your search to only those libraries with a link to their online image collection or their online exhibitions. Databases of digitised pictorial, as well as objects, in museum collections are available via the Australian Museums On-Line (AMOL) site.

Stock image libraries are also registered with the gateway - try a 'Standard search' on 'photo%' or 'image%'. You can even use the Gateway to also discover what digitisation projects are underway!
