Every animal is a magical, mystical, divine presence.Pets are animals willing to extend that presence to our daily lives.
If only for this, we owe them eternal respect and gratitude.
-- R.R. Holster Jr.
The death of a beloved cat or dog can hit an owner hard, but
a sympathetic ear is available. Every week, the University of
Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine fields calls on its
hot line for grieving pet owners (352-392-4700, Ext. 4080).
Dial in anytime, leave a message, and a trained
volunteer--often a veterinary student--will call back within
24 hours, between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Eastern time.
Volunteers are trained to handle just about anything--like the
call that came from the grief-stricken owner of an unusually
long-lived goldfish. Grieving pet owners also may be able
to find a sympathetic voice, or even a support group, at a
local shelter or humane society. --Robin M. Bennefield/U.S. News |
