Specific Dog Care Information

Dog grooming

Proper dog grooming is an important part of dog care. It not only makes your dog look better, but contributes to his physiological and psychological health.

All dogs need grooming, but some dogs need more grooming than others. Dogs that need less grooming are unlikely to develop mats or tangles, except around the ears or on the legs for some breeds. However, they do need periodic grooming to keep coats and skin healthy. Grooming during shedding helps move the process along, lessen the hairy tumbleweeds in the family room, and encourage the growth of new coat.

Remember, grooming provides the bonding time for you and your dog. So enjoy as much as possible from it!

Dog boarding

Dog boarding is not an easy task. Personal recommendation being the best way, and the really good ones are always busy at peak holiday periods, therefore you have to make your reservation well in advance.
It is wise to start leaving your dog in a kennel when he is quite young as he will settle in more quickly. Older dogs left in kennels for the first time may not eat much and may lose a great deal of weight through fretting.
When you are choosing a kennel, it is wise to visit several so that you can make comparisons. Flashy facilities are not very important - what matters is the way the dogs are cared for, how they are exercised, fed and watered, and general hygiene.

Dog breeding

People breed dogs for a variety of reasons, some more valid than others. No matter what is the reason, do not take this responsibility lightly. Dog breeding requires tremendous time and effort. The important thing to avoid is deliberately bringing into the world animals which will end up unwanted and possibly mistreated.
Dog breeders are usually very anxious about matching pedigrees and some show dogs are very inbred - the result of father/daughter or mother/son or half-brother/half-sister matings. This experiment can be successful if carried out by someone who knows the dogs and their background very well and who is aware of the risks of producing puppies with hereditary defects. However, close line breeding is best avoided.
