General Advice for Travellers Tips
Fire Bans
Respect fire bans (broadcast on the radio) and be careful with cigarette butts
and broken glass which can ignite bushfires in hot, dry weather. If caught in
a fire head for a clearing (avoid dense tree growths). If in a car get off the
road, stay in the vehicle, get under the dashboard and cover yourself, preferably with a woollen blanket.
Bushwalking
If bushwalking or camping be sure to leave an itinerary with friends and go carefully
prepared for the contingency of getting lost. Remember that nights can be freezing despite the daytime temperature.
Note that condoms are available at chemists, some all-night department stores
and at vending machines in the toilets of universities and many hotels. The pill
is only available on prescription which requires a visit to a doctor.
Quarantine Arrangements
Australia is a beautiful country free from many pests and diseases found elsewhere in the world. Quarantine helps keep it that way.
When entering Australia, it's vital that you declare on your Incoming Passenger
Card any food, live plants and animals and any items made from wood, plants or
animals. Quarantine officers use detector dog teams, X-ray machines and random
baggage checks to detect undeclared quarantine items. If you conceal items of
quarantine concern, you may receive an on-the-spot fine or you could be prosecuted.

Pre-Departure Planning
Passports:
You need to ensure you have a full passport that is valid for at least the full
duration of your trip but 3 months. If you are visiting many different countries,
you should must ensure that you have plenty of clear pages. You will receive many
stamps travelling through South Africa and having blank pages inserted into your passport whilst you are travelling is difficult.
It is a good idea to take a photocopy of your passport and either keep it with
a friend/family member at home who you can easily contact or, if you will be accessing your email whilst away - email a copy to yourself.
Travel Insurance:
It is advisable to always ensure you have a comprehensive travel insurance policy
which covers you for repatriation to your home country. against personal accident, medical attendance, baggage and other valuables.
If you need medical care whilst in Africa, it is best to be aware that medical
providers do not accept payment through your insurance company. In these circumstances
you will have to pay in full after your treatment and file a claim with your insurance
company for reimbursement. Therefore you should have access to cash, either from
a credit card or by wire transfer. If you need assistance contact the country's
local embassy or representative. To be compensated you must be treated by licensed
medical personnel and provide your insurance company with proper documentation and receipts.
Vaccinations/Medical:
It is very important to get the latest up-to-date information and advise for the
countries you plan to visit from your physician or from a specialist in tropical illnesses and diseases.
Important, accurate and up-to-date Health Information, covering illnesses and
diseases, Malaria, recommended vaccinations, advise for staying healthy and how
to avoid getting sick, what to take with you, what do when you return home can be found by clicking the following links.

Travel Security
Isn't it dangerous out there?
Some people are put off from independent travel by the apparent risks. Not only
can you get sick, or killed in a bus wreck, but there may be people trying to
rob you, cheat you, rape you, drug your drink, or maybe even put a knife in your ribs.
This is a long discussion, during which you will hear about dozens of ways
you can lose your belongings to thieves, and a few ways that you may be physically
harmed. It can be discouraging just reading about it. Don't worry, in the process
I will tell you exactly what you can do to make the chances of your becoming a
victim very small. In many countries the dangers are few and can be avoided with basic precautions.
People often use the word dangerous to describe the danger of theft, not bodily
harm; do not confuse theft-prone with physically dangerous. In some of the most
dangerous countries and cities in the Third World, there is very little risk of
being physically attacked. You can read of innocent people being shot down by
mass-murderers in the USA, and terrorist bombings in Europe. Personally, I am
far more frightened by these random acts of violence at home than by the methodical
workings of criminals in the Third World, who are only after your money. Learn how they work, and you will be safe.
Out on the Road, you enter a new way of life. There are different rules out
there, and more precautions to be learned. The local people already know the rules.
The sooner you learn them, the more problems you will avoid. When you take precautions,
you will be safe. When you feel safe, you can enjoy your trip.

Worldwide Travel Guides
North America Guides
North America consists of four countries, the United States, Canada Mexico and
Greenland. Of these countries, the U.S. receives by far the largest amount of
travellers. New York , San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle are
only some of the well known and exciting cities. These places may not have as
many old monuments as you usually find in Europe, but sheer natural beauty makes
up for the lack of history. The Everglades, Yellowstone and Yosemite are among the best National parks in the world.
South Asia Guides
South Asia is one of the most richly rewarding regions of the world to visit.
South Asia consists of four or five countries, depending on the perspective of
the reader: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and last but not least Bhutan. Its
scenery is amongst the most varied and exciting anywhere, its history and culture
are just not packed and brought out on show for the tourist, but lived. Allow a lot of time if you are planning to travel the region.
Europe Guides
The old world is really quite old. Every other town in Europe is packed with monuments
dating back several centuries. Little villages were once the capitals of a kingdom.
The countries are small, but most of them were once the center of an empire that embraced the whole world.
Africa Guides
Africa is where life begun with Black Eve, Africa is where civilization first
developed on the Banks of the river Nile. From the old Arab cities of North Africa,
through the enormous desert of the Sahara, from the thick of the jungle to the
great Game Parks, Africa offers a huge diversity of sights to the traveller. But
above all, getting in contact with the native inhabitants makes it an unforgettable visit.
South America Guides
South America is salsa, cumbia, samba and tango. Life really swings there. The
mixture of African, Indian and European influences have given south-america a very distinct flavour and I like it.
Australia Guides
The Pacific. Doesn't it dream up images of blue water and wonderful islands? Because
of their relative isolation from the super-powers that is more or less still true.
Although they were last to be discovered, Australia and the Pacific islands were a fine addition to planet Earth.

Lafayette Natural History Museum & Planetarium, Lafayette, LA
The Lafayette Natural History Museum & Planetarium exists to encourage the
discovery and understanding of the natural world, the universe, and the role of
humans within them. Exhibits and planetarium programs change regularly. Collections
include cultural artifacts of South Louisiana, Louisiana landscape paintings, osteological materials, and meteorites and tektites.
National Parks &Forests
Step outside and explore the country's
National Parks, State Parks, and National Forests. Explore the majesty of Yellowstone
in the summer, or the splendor of Yosemite in the winter. No matter the season,
Travel can help you plan the perfect vacation in America's great outdoors.
Little River Canyon National Preserve
Alabama's four national forests, Bankhead, Conecuh, Talladega, and Tuskegee
National Forests encompass over 664,000 acres of public land. These Forests stretch
across portions of the Cumberland Plateau, Appalachian Mountains, Piedmont and
Coastal Plain. These diverse lands range in elevation from over 2,000 feet in
the Talladega National Forest, down to only 100 feet above sea level in the Conecuh
National Forest. High overlooks, rolling hills, and tree-studded flat land are
among the contrasting terrains in the forests. Two wilderness areas are located
within the national forests. The 25,002-acre Sipsey Wilderness in the Bankhead
National Forest, is the second largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi.
The 7,245-acre Cheaha Wilderness in the Talladega National Forests offers high
elevations, with numerous overlooks for panoramic views of east-central Alabama.
Guide to Offbeat Tourist Attractions
National Parks, unique public lands or bodies of water within a country, set aside
by the government to protect ecosystems, plant and animal species, scenic landscapes,
geologic formations, or historical or archaeological sites.
National parks are managed primarily for public recreation, providing exceptional
locations where visitors can view wildlife and enjoy the outdoors. Generally,
these protected public lands are off-limits to hunting, livestock grazing, logging,
mining, and other activities that exploit natural resources. Some parks commemorate
significant historical events. For example, Gettysburg National Military Park
(1895) in Pennsylvania conserves the 13 sq km (5 sq mi) site of the pivotal battle in the American Civil War (1861-1865).
Today at least 600 million people a year visit more than 1,000 zoos around
the world. The Berlin Zoological Gardens in Germany is home to the world’s
largest animal collection, with more than 15,000 animals belonging to nearly 1,700
species. The United States and Canada have more than 200 zoos, including the Bronx
Zoo in New York City and the Metropolitan Toronto Zoo. The 107-hectare (265-acre)
Bronx Zoo cares for more than 835 different species of animals, one of the most
diverse animal collections in the world. The Metropolitan Toronto Zoo covers 290
hectares (710 acres), one of the largest zoos in the world. Most zoos house land
animals, but others, known as aquariums or Oceanarium, focus entirely on animals
that live in fresh water or the sea. Aquariums such as the John G. Shed Aquarium
in Chicago, Illinois, are among the most popular animal attractions today.

Virginia Introduction
Virginia (state), in full Commonwealth
of Virginia, state in the eastern United States and one of the original 13 colonies.
Named for the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I of England, Virginia was England’s
first successful overseas colony and the site of the first permanent English settlement
in America. At one time it held territory from which several other states were
later formed. West Virginia was part of Virginia until 1863. Virginia’s
rich political heritage helped shape the democratic principles on which the United
States was founded. Virginia played an important role in the American Revolution
(1775-1783), and it entered the Union as the tenth of the original 13 states on
June 25, 1788. During the American Civil War (1861-1865) the state’s capital,
Richmond, was also capital of the Confederacy. The state has long been nicknamed Old Dominion.
California Activities & Attractions
Food & Wine
With a year-round growing season, a colorful mix of cultures from around the globe
and artful chefs California is alive and cooking. It is also the most important
wine growing area in the United States, producing 90 percent of the nations wine.
The famous Napa and Sonoma regions produce balanced and richly textured Chardonnay
, Pinot Noir , Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon . California's cool coastal valleys
are ideal for producing sweet, white, German style varieties, while the hot Central
Valley and Sierra Nevada foothills are home to robust Zinfandel Cabernet Sauvignon.
Hiking
You supply the legs, and California supplies the trails. Your outing can be as
simple as a brief walk in city and regional parks , or as challenging as a months-long backpacking expedition on the Pacific Crest Trail.
Rafting & Kayaking
If you want a rollercoaster experience that will get your adrenaline pumping,
sign on for a guided inflatable-raft trip down any of nearly 50 whitewater runs, as thousands of "river rats" do every year.
Skiing & Snowboarding
There's plenty of powder in California, where the snow falls in feet, not inches,
and where more than 50 downhill and cross-country ski areas beckon to winter-sports
enthusiasts. Whatever you choose for your snow- sliding gear - alpine skis , snowboard
, Nordic skis , or even an inner tube - you'll find thousands of snow-covered acres.
Bicycling
Thanks to the vision of a few garage tinkerers who slapped fat tires on fat frames,
California is the Mecca of mountain biking. With a variety of terrain, it's also a magnet for road cyclists.
Advice For Safe Air Travel With Your Guider
Airliners are designed to move people and baggage. Do you think of your precious
guitar as baggage? Probably not. The airline industry, in general, doesn't understand
that your instrument needs special care, so you need to take special steps when
taking your valuable guitar along on a commercial flight. (If you guitar is an
absolute "knock-around" that you aren't worried about, read no further).
I've been told by guitar makers that it's always safe for an acoustic guitar
when it's in the same environment where humans would be comfortable. Since I can't
imagine being comfortable in the baggage hold of an airliner, I don't want my
guitar down there either. But there are worse dangers, far worse than the baggage hold environment, lurking in the air travel process.
Most damage to instruments happens in baggage handling. Baggage handling systems
are a combination of automated conveyors and humans. The main dangers encountered during baggage handling come from contact and impact.
Contact damage--from sliding against conveyor machinery or other luggage--results
in scratches, and case hardware being ripped-loose and bent. A friend of mine
had a Mark Leaf travel case--you know, the one that looks like a coffin (and is
built like a tank)--nearly destroyed by baggage handling during a normal, cross-country
flight. When the airline found his guitar, after losing it for half a day, four
out of five latches were broken, and the case was held shut by just one latch.
Luckily, the guitar was unscathed, but who wants to lose a $500 case?

Delaware Principal Cities
Most of Delaware’s residents live in urban areas, particularly those
in the northern part of the state. Wilmington, pictured here, is Delaware’s
largest city. It developed as a major manufacturing and shipping center on the Delaware River.
Delaware’s largest city is Wilmington, which in 2000 had an estimated
population of 72,664. Wilmington was the site of the first permanent settlement
by Europeans during the colonial era and is today the chief center of manufacturing,
commercial, and transportation activities in the state. Wilmington is also the state’s foremost cultural center.
Dover, the state capital, serves as an administrative and commercial center. Tourism
is also important to the city, which is noted for its many buildings of historic
interest. Dover’s population was 32,135 in 2000. Newark, with a population
of 28,547, is a manufacturing city and the seat of the University of Delaware.
Milford, with a population of 6,732, is a trade center for farms in southern Delaware.
Seaford is an industrial community on the Nanticoke River. Lewes is one of the
oldest ports on the East Coast. New Castle, site of William Penn’s first
landing in North America, is a quaint river town south of Wilmington. Its historic
courthouse and cobblestone streets attract many visitors
Arkansas State Park
Arkansas state parks are located atop the Natural State's highest mountains,
on the shores of lakes large
and small, and in other varied natural settings. Some preserve Native American
archeological sites and Civil War battlegrounds, while others are museums and
memorials preserving additional facets of the state's heritage.
The recreational, geographical and historical diversity of the 51 parks is reflected
in the many special events and programs hosted by an award-winning corps of park interpreters.
The events include festivals; wildflower and birding weekends; star watch parties;
lake tours to observe bald eagles and other wildlife; pioneer and Civil War reenactments
and other living history presentations; gatherings featuring folk, bluegrass and
gospel music; guided nature hikes; fishing derbies; summer day camps; recreational games for children; and campfire programs.
