Full-Text Content with a Single Click
Resolver is Endeavor's full-text OpenURL link resolver program.
NISO-compliant, the system provides context-sensitive linking
from reference databases to the full text of both OpenURL
and non-OpenURL target resources. If the full text of an
article is not available, Resolver provides enhanced target
linking to the OPAC, document delivery, pay-per-view, ILL,
the Web, other library catalogs or suitable sources in order
to locate the item. Resolver also offers a customizable interface
that can capture a library's look-and-feel.
The Emergence of Reference Linking
Not long ago, library users were required to search through
an Abstract and Index database and then visit the stacks
in order to access a full-text version of a particular citation
in the library collection. Reference linking, or the ability
to get from a citation to its full-text c
ounterpart, has
transformed this process by taking advantage of new technology
to provide immediate, electronic access to the full text.
A user must complete two essential tasks when locating a citation
through reference linking. They must know where the full text
of the citation is located and they must link to the materials
in order to read the full text of the citation. Information about
the appropriate resource - that is, all the alternative locations
where the full text is available to a specific reader - depends
on the respective holdings of a library and the user's individual
access privileges at that institution. The suitability of the
link
depends entirely on circumstances that are user-specific or
context-sensitive. An OpenURL framework allows building context-sensitive
links based on the information contained in the library's specific
knowledge base of holdings and references.
Lowering the Barriers to Full-Text Access
Libraries are increasingly seeking to take advantage of improvements
in OpenURL linking technology to access full text from an
article citation. However, many have discovered that implementing
a link resolver system can be frustrating. It involves critical,
often labor-intensive steps such as creating a knowledge
base, retaining a technology specialist or systems programmer
to install and customize the software, purchasing additional
hardware for adding a link resolver server and working around
the link resolver's inability to link to full-text sources
that are not OpenURL enabled.
Resolver takes the frustration out of reference linking. The
system is designed as a hosted solution, which significantly
reduces the technology and labor requirements of library staff
while alleviating the need for institutions to supply a dedicated
server. Since no major infrastructure changes are necessary,
you won't need to stretch your IT resources to accommodate
the new software. Additionally, it contains advanced management
functionality, including links, linking rules, proxy redirects,
passwords for particular providers and local database redirects.
Leveraging the Knowledge Base
Library patrons want assurance that they have access to the
most recent research materials available. With more than 100,000
unique titles and 600 collections automatically updated on a
weekly basis, including eBooks, Resolver's multi-disciplinary
Knowledge Base allows effective management of library E-resources
and as well as user access to those resources.
The weekly revisions to the Knowledge Base include updates
to the title content, coverage and links for full text collections
as well as overall link checking. The recency of these materials
helps increase the likelihood that patrons will continue to
leverage library resources in their research. Additional functionality
permits libraries to establish their own update schedule for
the Knowledge Base, enabling them to further cater to patron
requests.
End-to-End Reference Linking
Resolver was built to provide accurate context-sensitive links
from OpenURL-enabled sources to full-text sources while dramatically
reducing setup and maintenance time. It links from reference
databases to the full text of both OpenURL and non-OpenURL
target sources and to all targets with a Web interface. It
increases patron satisfaction by enabling access to alternative
information resources while its customizable interface allows
a library to maintain its brand. Resolver pinpoints the resources
most commonly accessed by generating usage statistics reports,
providing the institution with enhanced insights into how
it can better serve its patrons.
By enabling patrons to easily search, retrieve, and access
vital library resources, Resolver provides a robust reference
linking tool for research and academic libraries.
