Sunny skies or moonlit nights make this spring's day-to-evening bejeweled accessories even prettier. The gaiety of warm weather festivities provides the perfect backdrop for hair jewelry to complete a variety of looks. Goldstein has carried hair jewelry, embedded with Swarovski crystals, by Medusa's Heirlooms of New York for about five years after originally discovering it in Paris.

Although Medusa's Heirlooms hair jewelry is sold in designer boutiques, including Anna Sui's, and specialty department stores worldwide, the company's president, Kathryn Hausman, and designers try to maintain the unique quality of their collections. Medusa's Heirloom hair jewelry costs between $10 and $35 at Jacques Dessange, making it easy to collect pieces made with the Austrian crystals renowned for quality.

Some very pretty, though more specialized, hair jewelry, I think as far as hair jewelry goes, you don't really want to overdo it. You want decide if you are going to do either hair jewelry or regular jewelry. If you're going to do hair jewelry, you can wear something simple like diamond stud earrings," Goettman says. Hair Jewelry Watch Chain - professionally braided human hair Circa 1855. The color of the hair is deep brown on both ends and dark blonde in the center. One end is a gold sheherd's hook to put through a button hole and the other end having a spring clip to hold a watch. There are 14k fittings on both ends and in the middle. All fittings are hand etched.

Total length is 13". It is in PERFECT condition. I am not an expert in hair jewelry, but I do know, that the light colored hair, such as blonde is more valuable than the darker hair. Also, to have a combination of hair colors also makes it more valuable. This particular piece is around 140 years old, and the condition is absolutely perfect. It also has some nice weight to it. Lastly, a lot of the hair jewelry that had gold fittings, usually the gold was 10k or filled.

Hairwork Of The Nineteenth Century - Hair Jewelry

hairwork of the nineteenth century - hair jewelry. The nineteenth century saw an explosion in the popularity of hairwork in Europe and the United States. Indeed, most surviving examples originate from this period. [1] Today, nineteenth-century hair jewelry is invariably associated with mourning, and, while much was made and worn for that purpose, much was also made and exchanged to mark happier circumstances, such as an engagement, or friendship. Ultimately, it was produced purely as a fashion accessory.

Sentimental hair jewelry was worn by members of all classes, from commoners to royalty. She was given several hair bracelets on the occasion of her sixteenth birthday, which may have established her lifelong inclination to offer and accept items of hair jewelry. When the Empress Eugenie (r. 1853-1871) and her husband, Napoleon III (r. 1852-1871), traveled to England on a state visit in 1855, Queen Victoria wrote in her journal on April 20 that Eugenie "was touched to tears when I gave her a bracelet with my hair."

From the time of her engagement to Prince Albert (1819-1861) in 1839, Victoria always wore a lock of his hair in a locket, brooch, or bracelet, and his untimely death in 1861 spurred the development and popularity of hair jewelry. The queen's intense and intractable grief launched her, and thus the rest of England, into a seemingly endless mourning period of forty years, which in its excess eventually made mourning fashionable. Hair jewelry, one of the few acceptable decorative accessories in the strictly prescribed mourning dress toilette.

Many southern women would say that no outfit is complete without accessories. Women living in the 1800’s were no exception. Once a woman got dressed, it was very common for her to want to place a ribbon and/or brooch at the neck, possibly a ribbon around the waistline, earrings, and a bracelet or two. Jewelry was a necessary accessory. A variety of materials were used to make jewelry during the 19th century. This was also a sentimental era. One might be surprised to know what materials have been used to make jewelry during that time.

Mourning jewelry adornment became a very popular fashion trend. The meaning behind the jewelry evolved when people began to create and adorn “hair work” jewelry as personal keepsakes representing a living relative, friend, lover, etc. It became known as hair jewelry. Human hair—the widely popular material used for making jewelry in the 19thcentury. Suggested reading on hair jewelry, compiled by the Hairwork Society.

Time Takes A Toll On This Dying Art

time takes a toll on this dying art.Public mourning has been a tradition since the 1600s, beginning with the execution of Charles I. It gained its greatest popularity in the 1800s, which can be traced to two catalysts; the American Civil War and the death of Prince Albert. Very early examples of mourning jewelry were in the form of a head or skull enameled in black & white. After the Civil War it was considered a status symbol to wear mourning rings.

Hair jewelry, once ignored and inexpensive, is finally achieving the recognition it deserves as a lost craft which required a tremendous investment of time. Quality workmanship, which was then taken for granted, is found only in top quality jewelry today, if at all. Early jewelry was made to last and people owned less while wearing their few good things longer.

Unlike most other jewelry styles which appear periodically, hair jewelry will not make a showing again. The time and labor required to produce it does not make it a profitable item for mass production, or by devoted craftsmen, which assures that if we find it on the market today it is surely not a reproduction such as one might find with other antiques.

Victorian Hair Jewelry

Whether fashioned in the home as a lady's craft or professionally by a hair weaver or a jewelry maker, hair jewelry was the height of the romanticism and sentiment that characterized the Victorian era. Some pieces were done as mourning pieces or "momento mori". While some may find this morbid, for the Victorians death was a common and accepted part of everyday life especially due to the higher infant mortality rate and the devastation of the Civil War.

Hair jewelry was not always mourning jewelry, however, as it was also crafted as love tokens from sweethearts, family members and cherished friends. Rings might be engraved with loving messages and memorials either on the face or inside the band, and might also have hidden compartments for the hair.Brooches came in all sizes from the daintiest lace pin to a larger 3" oval meant to be worn at the neck. Watch chains and bracelets often show the most ingenious hair weaving techniques with more than one color of hair often used, as perhaps a chain given by three daughters to their father.

Hair Jewelry Provides Unique Display

hair jewelry provides unique display. These examples of ‘hair jewelry’ represent a favorite pastime for women from about 1850 to the beginning of the 20th century. The hair jewelry is featured in the Clement Library’s current exhibition, ‘From the Cradle to the Grave: Sources for Women’s History,’ on display through Dec. 9. ‘Godey’s Lady’s Book’ offered hair jewelry for sale and provided patterns.

The finished product was then boiled again, dried and removed from the mold. The final step of mounting was done by a jeweler. Photo by Bill Wood, U-M Photo Services.

style of jewelry popular in the mid-19th century. Lockets of the hair of loved ones were preserved in brooches under glass. The hair was sometimes intricately curled or woven. These pieces were often inscribed on the back to identify the donors. Later in the century, hair was woven into watch chains, bracelets, and earrings and given as tokens of affection. The History Of The Hair Jewelr

This beautiful treasure from the ancient past is the most unusual piece of handmade art you will ever own. Some say the TRYXä hair jewelry is older than the Pyramids. Its description appears in the oldest Indian texts. Others relate it to astrology, and call its shapes by the names of the planets. Often used as a tool to reveal mythical stories hidden inside each of us, creation of the universe, and all that will be.

The Sumerians originally designed and created the TRYXä hair jewelry , which they called the 'DurENKi', meaning 'Heaven and Earth Bond'. Invented as a mathematical model, it was used by the ladies as a hair adornment. The TRYXä hair jewelry was also used as an aid in remembering and telling stories. Used for relaxation, meditation and as a toy for all ages, it also helped in healing creative perception and mechanics of people. The term 'Mandala' is Sanskrit. It means circle (symbol of God) and Sphere (symbol of totality). Notice the similarity to the Sumerian word.
