Yoshida
Brothers Live in Concert
The Yoshida
Brothers will perform at the Aratani/Japan Theater in Little
Tokyo on Friday, June 2. Superstars in their native Japan,
Ryoichiro and Kenichi Yoshida have effected nothing short of
a cultural revolution with their muscular reinvention of the
traditional three-stringed Tsugaru-Shamisen instrument,
giving it the fiery passion of a rock guitar. The
charismatic duo’s fusion of the ancestral and the
avant-garde has won global renown, and their East-meets-West
vision innovates further with their new album, “Yoshida
Brothers III” -- available at
www.domo.com. Tickets range from $35 to $75 and can be
charged by phone at (213) 680-3700. The Theater is at 244

PET
CARE NEWS
Dr. Alice Villalobos

Common Skin Tumors in Senior Dogs
The
first veterinarian who initially sees the senior dog
often determines the fate of the senior dog with
cancer; therefore, it is important that practitioners
acquire sufficient knowledge about cancer. More than
half of the senior dogs in a veterinary practice will
die of cancer such as cutaneous, soft tissue sarcoma,
lymphatic, mammary, skeletal, oral, nasal, and
visceral, and neuro-endocrine tumors. Pet owners will
appreciate an early diagnosis and greater range of
options for treatment and longer-term survival rather
than euthanasia. When terminal, all dogs should be
offered end of life supportive care (like Pawspice
provides) from the bond-centered veterinary practice.

Japan’s Rich and Naturally Crafted
Sake
5/2006
All Natural Alcoholic Beverage
 In
Japan, where the seasons are clearly differentiated and which is
blessed with rich natural beauty, from a love of that nature comes
an enjoyment of sake that has been nurtured by a sumptuous
culture. The history of sake is an old one, extending back more
than a thousand years when the brewing process was first
developed. The method of crafting it is unique, requiring a high
level of expertise, so that precisely the right conditions are
created for the taste and fragrance that combines rice, water,
yeast, nature and the brewer’s art. All of these give birth to
something that may truly be called an artistic work. Sake is all
natural. It is not aged as wine is, so it never contains any
preservatives.

NEW OTANI HOTEL AND GARDEN’S POPULAR
SUMMER BBQ BEER GARDEN OPENS JUNE 12TH, 2006
Summer
BBQ Beer Garden in the scenic Japanese “Garden in the Sky”. Much
like a private garden with lush plants, meandering paths and
placid pool, it is a picturesque setting in which to wait out rush
hour traffic with a beverage and barbeque.
“The Beer
Garden is celebrating its 13th year since it was
started. Numerous customers greatly enjoy it and have been
frequently asking, ‘When will the Beer Garden be open this year?’”
says Mr. Akira Yuhara, Director of Food and Beverage for the
Hotel. “When we first started it, practically all of the patrons
were Japanese stationed here and that sort of clientele, but now
almost all of the patrons are local Americans.

What is “Jizake”?
“Jizake”
has, up to now, been defined as “regional sake” or “sake brewed in
a particular region” or “sake that can only be consumed in a
particular region.” In recent years it has come to be called a
“local brand.”In contrast to jizake,
“major producer’s sake” is that shipped all over the country, and
is called a “national brand,” representative of which is Fushimi
or Nada sake, known as “brands of major producing regions.” The
total combined production of the major producers, which are
concentrated in Kyoto and Hyogo Prefecture, amounts to 40% of all
of Japan.

FCI Celebrates 20th
Anniversary
Fujisankei Communications International, or FCI, is
celebrating its 20th anniversary this spring. In
conjunction with this milestone, FCI has a number of
surprises planned for its program schedule and is
broadcasting some exciting new shows. Two of those
shows are previewed here.
Team Medical Dragon,
broadcast Saturdays at 10:30 pm on KSCI Channel 18
starting on April 29th is a melodrama set in a
hospital. (The English title is somewhat odd. The
Japanese title is Iryu, which roughly means Dr.
Dragon. It takes I from isha = doctor and combines
it with the ryu = dragon of the hero’s given name,
Ryutaro.) The Japanese press release breathlessly
proclaims that it is a “revolutionary medical
drama,” but that should be taken with a grain of
salt.

Cho
U Given Finest Player Award
For
the third year in a row Cho U, Meijin has been
honored with the Kido Finest Player of the Year
Award. Ten go journalists representing the
newspapers that sponsor the major go tournaments in
Japan were members of the 39th Kido Awards Committee
that announced the prizes in the March issue of Go
Waarudo magazine. (Kido and Igo Club magazines
merged in 1999 to become Go Waarudo, but the
venerable Kido name lives on with these annual
awards.)

the Golden Pavilion

A
Golden temple built more than 600 years ago
The
Temple of the Golden Pavilion, Kinkakuji, is a
registered UNESCO World Heritage site. Emitting golden
rays of light at Kinkakuji-cho in the north ward of
Kyoto City, it attracts lots of tourists. Commonly
called Kinkakuji, its official name is Hokuzan-Rokuonji,
dating back to the Kamakura period from 1192-1333.
Kintsune Saionji, who lived from 1171-1244 and wielded
no small power, built a magnificent mountain villa
Kitayamadono at the foot of Kinugasa Mountain.

Petals Nail Salon
Last
month, I wrote about the Entrepreneur Training Program (ETP) classes
that I teach twice a year. This month, I am very excited to write
about a graduate of the ETP and the business she opened.
From the Beginning
I first met Vivian over the phone, a
few days before my Fall 2004 ETP was to start. She told me her
family owned a business in Little Tokyo. I later found out her
family business was Mickey Seki, Inc., which has been in existence
for over 70 years! Well, entrepreneurial blood must run in her
family, because she had plans to start a business of her own, one
that was unrelated to the business her family has run for over three
generations. Her mother had heard the Little Tokyo Service Center
offered small business assistance and insisted Vivian call.
