The jewel of the diamond
It was 1961. Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's single-season home run record in the major leagues and District 1 hosted the state finals for the Little League Majors.

Since then, Maris' total has been topped twice, but the district had not seen the state finals again. Now, 45 years later, Merrillville will host the tournament that decides which Indiana team gets a shot at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., and a chance at history.

"This is the tournament everyone wants," said District 1 administrator Steve Heck. "There are many jewels in different age groups, but this is the true diamond (tournament). Majors are the backbone of Little League. This is the tournament that made Little League famous."
