Keywords - What are they?

A keyword can be a single word or a short phrase.

When a surfer searches for a site, they will type a keyword into a search engine and the results that are displayed will be what the search says that are most relevant to that particular keyword.

For example, a search for “blue fuzzy widgets” will return the pages that a search engine thinks are most relevant to “blue fuzzy widgets”.

It’s a fairly simple concept.

Each keyword is another market for you (some are better than others). So, the more content you have, the more keywords you have and therefore the more markets you can target.

Optimising your site for keywords

It is one thing to know what a keyword is and another to know how to target keywords effectively. There is absolutely no point in being number one ranked for a term that no-one searches for.

In the same respect, there is no point in being number one for a term that is not relevant to what your site is about. Why get 1000 visitors a month searching for “carrots” when you sell motor parts? Your sales conversion rate will be terrible.

Ideally, each page within your site must be optimised for different search terms, which are all related to your product or service.

For example, if you sell office supplies, then you should be optimising a page for “office furniture”, a page for “stationery” and so on. This is an over simplification, but it is the main focus behind what you are trying to achieve.

Identifying keywords to target

There is no point in guessing what your potential customers will be searching for. Chances are that they will hold a completely different perspective to the product than you will.

In addition, the level or IT knowledge (mainly how to use search engines) will be a lot less than you hold. There are online tools out there that can be used to find out how to identify your keywords.

They will tell you how many people search for a particular keyword, how many sites are competing on that term and will also offer potential alternatives.

You can use these tools to identify your market.

The basics of optimising your pages

You will be optimising each page you have for a different, related keyword. A general rule of thumb is that consistency equals relevance!

So, if you have a page that you want to optimise for the phrase "blue widgets";

  • The title of the page should be "blue widgets".
  • The filename of the page should be "blue_widgets.htm"
  • The phrase "blue widgets" should be in the text (preferably near the top).
  • Your page should begin with the heading, "blue widgets".
  • Get the idea?
  • This can be applied to your META information as well, but it is commonly believed that most search engines pay little or no attention to your META information.

Be careful though!

SPAM!

The bane of the Internet!

Keyword spamming can get you kicked out of the search engines and have your domain blacklisted.

Don't do it!

Keyword spamming can be:

  • Keyword stuffing text (ie, blue widgets, blue widgets, blue widgets)
  • Hidden text (text and background same colour - to hide keywords from user but not the search engines)
  • These methods and many more run the risk of your website being banned from search engines.
  • Get the message?

Anything you do to to your site should be for your visitors first, then for the search engines. It doesn't matter if you are not number one for a particular term - it just means you don't have the content to justify it.

There are rare occasions where major search engines may hand review a website, but in general they implement algorithms to spot commonly used spam techniques, and simply filter out sites that the algorithms flag.

Create more content - don't spam!

By building up a decent online business with good content, and using no underhand techniques, you can increase your traffic and sales conversions at the same time.
