What is RSS?

RSS or "Really Simple Syndication" allows a site to distribute some of its content through other channels: through specialized RSS readers or through other sites that republish articles – very much in the way some newspaper columnists have their articles syndicated across national or international publications.

An RSS feed consists of a list of titles with brief summaries of the article. When you see a headline which attracts your interest you can click on it to view the full story in your browser.
You can show and combine feeds from various sites, filter and sort the kind of information you want and display the news items in a variety of formats or choose to be alerted of new postings.
It makes it easier to stay up-to-date by providing you with the very latest information that interests you.

RSS feeds are rapidly growing in popularity. Unlike subscribing to a newsletter or e-mail notification service, there’s no need to fill out a form and provide personal information. Instead, just enter the address of the feed in your RSS reader.

How do I start using RSS feeds?

The first thing you need is something called a news reader. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications. All allow you to display and subscribe to the RSS feeds you want.

How do I get a News Reader?

There is a range of different news readers available, both web readers and downloadable applications, and new versions are appearing all the time.
(See right - examples of RSS readers.)

Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to take this into account when you make your choice.
