Cité-Soleil: Grinding poverty, relentless violence
Built in the 1960s to house a few thousand workers, Cité-Soleil is now one of the largest shantytowns in the northern hemisphere and a microcosm of all the ills that beset Haitian society: endemic unemployment, illiteracy, the collapse of public services, insalubrity, crime and violence.

The Quatre-Cercueils neighbourhoodSituated on the outskirts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, Cité-Soleil is home to 200,000 to 300,000 people, the great majority of whom live in extreme poverty. Since 2004 it has been the scene of periodic clashes between the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) and armed groups entrenched in the shantytown.
