Broadband Bridges the Generation Gap, 4.24.06
The differences between generations are many.....and quite often dramatic in nature. But the one thing that the younger and older generations of today share in common is that broadband is a very important platform for news. The latest Pew Internet and American Life study measured both young and old broadband users and the media they used to obtain their news. As you can see from the following results, Internet news was almost equal in percentage of use on a typical day between the two generations. But, there were dramatic differences in the use of other media. Broadband Users: "Getting News on the Typical Day" | Under Age 36 | Over Age 50 | Local TV | 51% | 61% | Internet | 46 | 43 | Radio | 41 | 57 | National TV | 40 | 62 | Local Paper | 28 | 52 | National Paper | 17 | 23 | As you would expect, there were also differences in news media preference between those consumers with broadband and those with dial-up. Broadband users relied much more on the Internet for news on a daily basis. Adults 36-50: "Getting News on the Typical Day" | Broadband | Dial-up | Local TV | 60% | 72% | Radio | 53 | 57 | National TV | 49 | 52 | Local Paper | 41 | 40 | Internet | 40 | 30 | National Paper | 12 | 10 | Read the full report at: http://www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/178/report_display.asp
