5. Pompeii Pompeii archaeological ruins are famous worldwide for being a unique example of a two thousand years old city frozen in times. This city was covered by the ashes of a sudden eruption on the 24th August 79 a.c. and it remained untouched up to the XVIII century when little by little it was brought to light. Monuments as the Forum, the amphitheatre, the houses and all the other findings show us not only the physical places where the life took place, but allowed also multi sectorial investigations which explain us social habits and details of that society. On the other hand it's the first documented natural catastrophe in history.
6. Ercolano . Archaeological site of Ercolano 6. Ercolano Ercolano was another sea town affected by Vesuvio eruption of 79 D.C. but while Pompeii was buried by ashes, Erculaneum was drowned by piroclastic fluxes that sealed the old town under more than 20 mtrs of mud as hard as the rock. Ercolano was the first site that Prince d'Elboeuf found at the bottom of a deep well digged in his land in the early XVIIIth century. Here is the famous "Villa dei papyri" where hundreds of papyri were found forming one of the biggest libraries ever found and a priceless evidence of the cultural life of those days.
7. Sorrento 7. City of SorrentoSorrento, known as Sorrentum 2000 years ago, is situated at the southern extremity of the Gulf. For this strategic position it was a sort of guardian for all the ships coming from south. Simply having a look at the Gulf from its high cliffs or at the nearby island of Capri to which once was united, it's worth a visit. But Sorrento is also a pleasant touristic city, offering interesting cultural visits (Museum Correale, Duomo, Cloister of Saint Francis etc). Local handicraft is famous for Limoncello liquors and nice inlayed furniture. Amalfi coast The Amalfi coast stretched by the cities of Naples and Salerno is for sure one of the wonders of all Italy. So it's hard to give up a visit to these places once you are in Naples. From the unique naturalistic scenery to the picturesque little towns disseminated from the sea level up to the edges of its high peaks along with an amazing history to tell, the Amalfi coast is worldwide known for the towns of Amalfi, Ravello and Positano.
