Google Sitemapsby Tim Barnett, 21-Jun-2005
Sitemaps is the latest technology offering from Google. It allows you you to upload every page of your website to Google for indexing.
This offers is a significant benefit to many database driven sites, especially sites with thousands of products, which often find it hard to get all of their product pages indexed by Google.
In its simplest form, you can upload a basic text file containing a listing of the URLs of all the pages within your website. If you want to try something a bit more advanced, you can adopt their XML schema, allowing you to associate information with each page.
One of the major advantages of utilising the XML schema with Sitemaps is the ability to assign a relative importance rating (on a scale of 1 to 10) to each of your pages. This way you can decide which of your pages you would rather Google display in the results pages.
