Registering a domain name is essential for most companies

To establish yourself on the Internet with a unique email address and/or website URL is a must. Most companies and organisations recognise the importance of having a unique domain name reflecting their corporate name and identity, and protects your company name from being used by other parties.

(No need to enter a domain extension)

 What is a domain name?
A domain name is an Internet address (example mistral.net) it is similar to a permanent phone number or address. A domain name also allows you to receive e-mail at a customised e-mail address. If your organisation’s name is Example Ltd., you could register the domain name example.com and your e-mail address could be
info@example.com If you setup a Shared Server, Internet users could visit your web site by visiting www.example.com  with their Web browser. These are just a few of the most common uses for a domain name.

What is a URL?
The term URL means Uniform Resource Locator. This is an address that lets people locate specific sites on the Internet. A URL is unique - it is a description of a computer’s location on the Internet much like your home address describes your location within a city. Web site addresses are URLs and an example of a URL is http://www.mistral.net.

What are the rules for creating a Domain name?
A domain name can be up to 67 characters long -- including the characters used to identify the Top Level Domain (.CO.UK, .COM, .ORG, etc.). Domain names are not case sensitive.

The only valid characters for a domain name are letters, numbers and a hyphen "-". Other special characters like the underscore "_" or an exclamation mark "!" are NOT permitted.

What if the name I want is already taken?
If the name you want to use is already taken – then try a slight variation on that name, think up a new one, register the same name with a different domain extension or visit us again to check again for another name. If your first choice is not available, consider the same name with a slight variation, or a different ending.
For instance: example.com is not available? Try example.net, example.co.uk

What is a Shared Server?
Once your domain is registered you can setup your web site on a Shared Server. This gives you an address such as www.example.com - it’s a web server with just your site on it. For more information visit the Shared Server page.

What should I do if I am planning to start an organisation in the future but I want to reserve a domain now?
If you are planning to start an organisation or company but do not have an official name established yet, simply enter your name in the Organisation field. Once you have established your organisation you can change your organisation name and information later.

Can I "park" my domain name on your servers? Is there a fee?
