Wilderness Areas

Mountain Lakes Sky Lakes Mount Thielsen

Wilderness is: "where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain." (1964 Wilderness Act)

The Winema National Forest is home to three Nationally recognized Wilderness Areas. All offer exceptional opportunities for mountain hiking and camping adventures. The views you will see during your visit are some of the most spectacular in the world! Learn more about our Wilderness Areas by selecting from the menu above or from the map below.

Remember that mechanized vehicles (including hang gliders, carts, wagons, bicycles and similar forms of mechanized transport) are prohibited. In addition, we ask that you put your campsite at least 100 feet away from lakes or streams, avoid tying livestock to live trees, avoid specially marked "restoration" sites, and check the trailhead signs for other important information.
